Etihad Will Begin Charging For Economy Seat Assignments - One Mile at a Time

Etihad Airways sent out an email this morning to Etihad Guest members, with the headline “Enhance Your Economy Class Journey.” How is Etihad enhancing the economy journey? By adding fees to select seats, of course, given that this will “ensure you select the perfect seat onboard.” That’s some next level marketing spin.

For flights as of July 15, 2018, Etihad will be charging for all economy seat assignments. This new fee will apply on Economy Deal, Economy Saver, and Economy Classic fares, as well as award tickets, though Economy Flex tickets will still be eligible for complimentary seat assignments in advance. As before, passengers can continue to select seats for free within 24 hours of departure.

It’s especially ridiculous that they’re applying this to tickets that are already issued. In other words, if you already booked a ticket for travel on July 15 or later but haven’t selected a seat, you’ll now be charged for the privilege of doing so.

This move doesn’t come as much of a surprise, and if anything I’m surprised it took Etihad so long to add this fee, given the financial situation they’re in. The airline is about to undergo a radical restructuring, and I fear as part of that we’ll continue to see them cost cut.

Can co form this is the case. At checkin in Dublin this week we were told that in the future we would need to pay for seat selection to guarantee that we would be be sitting together as a family. So Etihad has really reduced themselves to the level of Ryanair. Can only be a matter of time till we are paying for meals as well. Will add about €200 to a round trip for 4.

I am so disappointed to have chosen to be loyal to them! What a sad sad day for me, please let me know if there is any offers on matching status, I'd gladly move to other airline pronto!

I am so DISAPPOINTED with this change. This is my first Y trip to LHR from DMM since the change.

I don't care where I will be seated, hence I refused to pay for a seat, however they said that we can choose free seat 24 hrs prior to our trip. I checked my booking before leaving for airport and saw 8f for men AUH and 79k for AUH LHR. I was happy so did not do anything to it.

I only have 1hr and 15 mins layover and 5hey refused to give me my second boarding pass? Why?

Don’t fret kids - Johnny K is just awaiting his invitation to take the reins of Etihad - he’ll soon sort this mess out - can’t be that difficult to run an airline can it?

So what happene

that was their best answer!

Lucky my flight was on time, hence I run to the lounge, get them to print the boarding pass, but of course to get into the lounge I had to show my card as I have no boarding pass!

Oh pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee get someone in the knows to run better Etihad, I somewhat ashame flying them right now, it felt more like flying budget airlines than not. There were one flight to CGK where they forgot to load blanket in business class! and everyone who asked for it got economy blanket instead.

I recently booked an Etihad flight using Velocity points and you are unable to even pay to select any seats. Essentially you can’t add any options to the booking, even paid ( for eg pay for extra legroom seats).

Having been with Etihad for more than 10 yrs I can say that they love changes but they never row their ducks with that changes. They wait till people screamed before they fix anything. So my suggestion is to contact them either via facebook or call, you might be luckier that way.

A mother who was travelling with a baby and a 6 yrs old and had her 6yrs separated seat from her making me think that all this paying seats is actually just an extra job for the crews!

For people like me who could not careless paying extras, and or for those who are not willing to pay for whatever reasons, must be a burden for the crews :( It does make me thinking the worth of flying this kind of airlines if it only giving more problems to the crew ?
