AusBT has the scoop on Etihad's new lounges for Sydney and Melbourne, which have been a bit on-again off-again for the past year it seems.

  • Sydney and Melbourne to get new first & business lounges in 2014 with Sydney "early 2014" and located around the high gate 50s where EY flights run from
  • These won't be "joint venture" Virgin-Etihad lounges as first planned, they will now be Etihad's own lounges but with VA access on codeshare flights

New Etihad Lounges bound for Melbourne and Sydney

So etihad as apparently re-announced that they will be building new lounges in Melbourne and Sydney, but not as a joint partnership with VA. Opening dates listed as early 2014.

Good news all round I think as we should see high quality lounges being build - like the recent one in Paris!

Will be looking forward to use these lounges instead of the Koru lounge when i head to the US next year.

That is welcome news ! Come on EY make it a race between Mel and Syd to see who can open first !!! Lol! Ahh ok I do use Mel and not Syd! Can't blame me for trying !!

Bear in mind that if you're flying VA you'll only have access to these lounges if you're on an Etihad codeshare. This is not possible when travelling to the US.

I will believe an EY A380 in MEL when I see it - EY don't have that much of a presence there yet and don't seem to be in any real hurry to increase of improve that.

I suspect the deal will be a little more expansive for these two lounges, especially since Etihad have increased there shareholding in VA.

If the lounge operates the same way as the Air New Zealand Kouri lounge, then VA passengers (Plat, Gold, J travel etc) should be able to get in regardless on whether they are travelling to AUH or not. Hopefully this will be the case.

Unsure ... both SQ and NZ are bigger share holders than EY in VA ...... SQ are upgrading the SYD lounge very soon

Re: New Etihad Lounges bound for Melbourne and Sydney

What does "booked on codeshare Etihad flights" mean?

VA elites traveling on Etihad metal with VA flight numbers?

and/or

VA elites traveling on VA metal with EY flight numbers?

Slow news day at AusBT....? I guess it's a 'reminder article' with 777 services starting this weekend.

More seats and (I believe) a more efficient aircraft should be a good win for EY. Although not a fan of the 10 across seating in Y...

I wasn't aware EY also like EK has 10 across the 777... Hopefully I never have to fly either of them in economy anyway... so it seems only QR is the one with 9 across in Y, hopefully it stays that way with the 777X's also...

VA's 777s are 9 across too I believe, but would stand corrected as not travelled in one.
Agree, hopefully never have to fly in Y anyway, so it's a moot point for me!

I am very much hoping VA negotiate access for VA Plat's and Gold's for any VA or partner flight out of Melbourne and Sydney
