As I have a month in NYC coming up I was noodling around the interweb and came across this. I haven't tested it yet, but with a non specific email address eg gmail.com, hopefully will be quite useful for a month just before departure. If the 'special' finishes, soon, it goes up to USD1.99.

Has anyone used this yet?
I'm off to Florida for a few weeks and have just paid my USD$0.99 for first month's access which is a great deal.
BUT
I can't seem to download the app? The Apple app store only lets me download the AU or NZ versions of The Entertainment Book app. I can't download the US version. Which means I can't log in, my US membership doesn't work on the AU app.

Has anyone done this before? If so, what's the trick?

You'll need to create a US ITunes account and top it up with ITunes gift card. Quite easy to obtain online.
Note that you can't change your account back to your existing account for 90 days on the device you change Apple ID's on. For this reason I keep an old iPad mini for US ITunes purchases.
