Hi Experts,

I am new to this (premium flying) world and would like to maximize or get a better status that what im at the moment (which is nothing !)
- only MH Enrich Blue/QFF Bronze..

Been flying MH Business at least once a year MEL-KUL-MEL, and im not able to even get to MH Silver.. thinking to switch to QFF and hope you guys can point me to the right direction :
- any way i can get to QFF Silver within few months travelling domestically in AU ?
- when does QFF status credit zerolise ? (for eg, Enrich will be 31st Dec )
- can i convert my Enrich miles to QFF ?
- my cousin is kind enough to transfer 80K QFF points for me as gift (so i can use to reach Silver faster) not sure how this help ?
- if i were to redeem flight, do i still get SC and miles ?

I am still reading the related topic on this forum and Flyertalk, but will appreciate if anyone is kind enough to let me know the right topic/direction.

Hi annielee,

You need to understand how one actually gains status with MH or QF. The systems are not the same. MH requires you to fly 25,000 "elite miles" within your membership year. This is directly related to the amount of miles earned from flying, be it on MH or partner airlines. But you should be aware that different airlines/classes of travel earn at different rates. Flying MH MEL-KUL-MEL in business will earn between 1.25% and 1.75% of actual miles flown, depending on the fare class. As the distance flown is 7836 miles for this route, one trip per year is not enough. You can also earn on QF, however the miles earned is generally lower, and some fare classes don't earn at all! (Particularly discount economy.)

QF has a system where you need a certain amount of "status credits" each year to qualify for higher status. These are separate to points and are only earned from flying. The earn rates are higher on QF than on MH (it works both ways) and what you earn depends on the route, fare class and airline. You need 300 SCs per year to reach silver. If you want to see how many status credits you would earn for a flight, try using this calculator: https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/do/dyns/initialPointsEarned

Your QFF SCs are wiped to zero at the end of your membership year. You should be able to see what this date is when you log into your QFF account.

You can't convert Enrich miles to QFF miles.

If your cousin transfers you points, this will NOT get you any closer to silver as only status credits (which are not transferable) count towards that. Also, if you have points transferred to you, make sure that your account has been active in the past 18 months as the points will quickly expire if sent to an inactive account!

No points or SCs are earned on frequent flyer redemptions. (Unless you use QF Points plus pay, but that's terrible value - so don't do that, it's not worth it.)

In your case I suspect QF are a better option if you plan to do a bit of domestic flying. Though you will only earn 120 SCs for a MEL-KUL round trip on MH - a bit short of the 300 required.

One minor clarification qff silver requires 300SC in the first year then 250SC to retain in subsequent years.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

thanks @medhead and @Mattg for the quick explanation..
another q, will i get status credit if i choose the pay+points options ?
i cant find my membership year end on my QFF profile, can you share where exactly its located ?

Yes points plus pay will earn points/SC. But it is very poor value for anything but the cheapest economy airfare.

Not sure of the exact membership year location. Look for something that says "status credits required by xx_" to gain silver level.

Also to add; if you're flying in business class you will not see any added value by being silver or gold on qantas or enrich as well. If this is the case you want to go with whoever is netting you the most points. This may be a split between both airlines (since status may not matter) to extract the most value from each program.

For example: points plus pay on Malaysia can be extremely good value but you need Malaysia points.

The other consideration is where your credit card points can be filtered to...

The value of Enrich Points (including the Points+ Pay option) on MH, which used to be excellent, has been gutted with the devaluation of the Enrich award chart a few months ago. They are now essentially similar value to QF (although availability with Enrich points on MH flights might be better). Both schemes have similar high copay.

As a guide (not suggesting you do this):
To get to Silver with Enrich, you would need 17.5 MEL-SYD-MEL trips in Y (double that in B,H and quadruple in K,M,L,V) on top of your discounted business MEL-KUL-MEL (13 trips if full-fare business)

To get to Silver with QF you would need 4.5 MEL-SYD-MEL trips in Y (double that in discount economy) on top of the MEL-KUL-MEL

Unless you increase your MH flying, status-wise you would be better crediting your flights to QF. I personally wouldn't spend any extra money to try to get Silver (I might for Gold).

Points-wise you would get a few more Enrich points than QF points if you credited the MH flights to Enrich. However, unless you have a lot of Amex MR points or Westpac Altitude points to top up with, it would be difficult to accumulate enough to make a meaningful redemption. In any case, there are now many better uses for MR and altitude points than transferring to Enrich

Sorry for any confusion:

Copay is the cash you have to pay on top of points with a reward ticket (also known as taxes, YQ, carrier charge, fuel fines). Varies between airlines-both QF and MH are amongst the higher charging ones

In this context MR=Membership Rewards, the points earned on Amex-issued cards that are not tied into an airline (eg Platinum Charge, Platinum Edge)-they can be converted into multiple airline programmes
