Hi all,

I have heard and seen (on AFF) anecdotal evidence that Emirates may through check to another airline on a separate ticket, however never has anyone actually confirm it definitely works, I even called EK's AU res number last week and they really couldn't confirm.

Has anyone had actual success doing this?

My example is SYD-BKK on EK then BKK-KUL on MH (sep ticket) with a 5 hour change over in between

I have had success recently.

Apologies that may not be the answer you a looking for but I don't think there's a text book answer for your situation. It can depend entirely on the person you get at check in.

It depends on the first carrier.
In your situation, the first carrier is Emirates.

Here are the steps:
First see if Emirates have MH as a baggage interline partner. They do: Baggage allowance & Rules of our partners | Emirates Online Booking and Planning | Emirates

If yes, then call/email Emirates and ask them if your luggage will definitely be checked through.
If yes, then ask them to email you the same confirmation.
Print this confirmation out and be prepared to present it to the check-in staff if you have any issues at Check-in.

I recently did the same with 2 separate tickets using SQ to ET.
Here is the confirmation letter from SQ:

"Dear Mr. Browski
Thank you for your email.

Based on the information provided, we wish to advise the baggage would be checked through from Melbourne to Addis Ababa. At the Melbourne check in counter, you would be required to show all tickets so that staff can tag the baggage accordingly.

We hope the above assists with your query.
Yours sincerely

First segment is mel-syd(qf) then syd-bkk (ek) on one ticket, followed by bkk-kul on MH J, however as they(qf) won't through check to separate ticket i will ask qf to only check bags to syd so i can get EK to check through to kul on MH.

I would still get the letter. Just email them. You never really know how informed the check-in staff will be about any particular rules.
Couple of weeks back I was flying Qantas to HKG and then Hong Kong Airlines to Tianjin (on the one ticket). The Qantas check-in staff informed me that she was going to tag the bags just to HKG and I would need to collect my baggage and clear immigration in HKG (since it was apparantly the first port in China) and then re-check the bags.
I told her that nothing she just said was going to happen and please just tag my bags through to TSN. She protested, but did it anyway. No probs in either HKG or TSN of course.
