Its a big story floating around Cairns, airport though tightly lipped, but Mr. Aboud the newest rich lister who is spending 1B$ currently on brilliantly designed new hotels in Cairns and the Port Douglas Marina project thinks its a great fit for FNQ and will bring in thousands of extra visitors to the tropics.

While I can see Emirates wanting to fly to Cairns, I don't think it would be a simple DXB-CNS-DXB service (and not daily either). I would expect EK to combine it with another Australian destination (DRW/BNE/TSV?) or perhaps create a fifth-freedom tag to/from CNS.

I wonder how DXB-CNS-NAN would work?

Yes probably not direct, CX go CNS via BNE about 3 times a week, would e a good fit pickup or drop off in a capital city. A380 to TZV, hardly get up high enough to land in TSV!, nah they get best end of stock with M$ Gov't handouts they'll just have to come to Cairns on the luxurious Dash 8!. NAN don't think so out of route way.

Another tag via BKK or SIN would be nice.

Well yes even better, Cairns is such a great hoiday destination yet it is serviced mainly by full service airline CX direct to HKG, any new 1st rate airline that travels from/to Europe could be on a winner as they would garner a huge population in FNQ, a pass through would be ideal.

Mr Aboud the Syrian billionaire thinks Cairns is primed for huge growth and is investing at least M$900 so far to prove it, and cranes once again fill the sky after such a long time with new hotels of brilliant design, he also purchased the marina complex at Port Douglas anda massive complex is to be built here, also, M$ being spent on the convention centre, ditto on entertainment centre and the harbour finally is to be dredged to allow the largest ships to berth as well right in the city. cairns is really primed for more airline growth full stop.

.... cairns is really primed for more airline growth full stop....

I agree, it is a fantastic climate / location.

Just need to get rid of at least half the current population of dead-sh_ts to really allow it to blossom.

In the 27 years Ive lived in Cairns cannot believe how many have moved here from south especially Sydney (me too) and Melbourne, don't meet many locals who were born here. Population is now around 150K and visitor numbers well up year on year, more so domestic.

Cairns is my go to destination for a break from the Canberra winter. Sadly yet to make it there this year but hopefully will get a chance.

I agree a SIN tag flight would be great. Have no idea if possible for EK but I would imagine flights from Japan to Cairns would be well supported?

If anyone Qatar Doha-BNE-Cairns.

They did it with Canberra to get more Sydney flights no reason why they won’t do the same to BNE which is a major missing piece of the network

I would think DXB - CNS via Japan would be a bit out of the way, so I can't see that happening and JQ is already running direct daily CNS - HND (Tokyo) and CNS - ITM (Osaka) with 787's. HKG direct is serviced by Cathay Pacific and other mainland China cities serviced by China Southern and Eastern.

Singapore Airlines (Silk Air) has direct route Singapore - CNS. JQ used to go to CNS - Singapore via Darwin, but doesn't seem to anymore, so suggest there isn't sufficient capacity to warrant 2 airlines servicing the route.

JQ also does Bail direct.

Philippines Airlines used to fly Bangkok direct and onwards to Auckland, but I think that has ceased. So I would suggest that route is not viable.

Emirates only operate A380 and B777 pretty sure. Extremely unlikely that A380 would come to Cairns, but they would still want a high capacity route for the B777. I think the seasonal Jinair flight to Seoul is on B777 so it can be viable. I'm not sure there is capacity for direct DXB - CNS, but that is for the airline to decide. Maybe coughet is the way to go?

JQ operates between CNS and NRT (Narita) not HND in addition to OOL-NRT, and between CNS and KIX (Kansai) not ITM.

Given than EK has ceased there KUL-MEL sector and that they have started AKL - DPS they could look at
DXB - KUL - CNS - AKL or
DXB - DPS - CNS - AKL
depending on NZ through traffic.

Didn't realise that CNS was already directly connected to some Chinese cities!

I should just stick to the city name rather than try and sound smart by using the airport code :)
Why? Everyone else tries to sound smart by using the airport codes

Yeah. 4 airlines to 3 cities in the Pearl River Delta. That fascinates me...

Cheers skip

I live in Townsville and I'd be tempted flying EK out of Cairns. If I could do so on a QF ticket with a 30min QFLink hop from Townsville to connect it'd be far more tempting than tracking down to BNE.

While it may be fantastic news for CNS, I can't see how it would work with such a small population.

Its not just Cairns, be a million or two including Townsville plus outlying areas, many would do round trip in out of capital cities like CX currently do.
