So....my daughter and friend were flying home from Athens via Dubai this week.
On arrival at Athens airport, they were approached by an Emirates staff member, asking them what flight they were on.
Seems their flight to Dubai was overbooked, so they were asked if they would take a different flight. This involved another short stopover in Cypress.

As compensation, they were offered return flights from Australia to Europe.

As poor students.....they jumped at the chance of another European trip, with airfare already paid for !!

Emirites also gave them, exit row seats on the flight they did change to, plus duty free vouchers, and food vouchers for Dubai airport.

This seems like a very generous compensation package. Especially considering, they actual could still get their planned connecting flight to Melbourne, so really no inconvenience at all.

Has this happens to anyone else?

Also, how easy is it to now book their next "free" flight.

TQ

Sometimes compensation can be reasonable, other times not, and often depends on your perspective.

Will all depend the terms of the voucher

Hi,

I'm surprised that no one else has any comments about this compensation offer.
Has it not happened to anyone else? Or even been heard of?

TQ

Sounds very generous - the OP's for several other threads on here would have been delighted if their problems had been resolved like this!

I haven't flown Emirites but have been offered compensation of hotels and flights by airlines when they are overbooked, but always rejected as I prefer to go on my original schedule.

Remarkably generous compensation - especially if there were no restrictions on the additional Europe flight they were offered.

Best I've received from Qantas is an overnight hotel and being put on the same flight the next day.

This compensation is fantastic and I would jump on it if offered.

There is another current thread where a group were travelling together in business and on return one of them downgraded to economy. They were offered voucher of some sort but they refused as they wanted to travel in business class.

By the way this is how every airline should handle compensation. Be very generous to the customer you are inconveniencing not try to further profit from them after screwing them.

Friends of ours told us last week that Emirates had been very generous when one of their flights had been overbooked. They had booked J JNB-DXB-HKG return (on special for about US$2K for both) and on the way back, the J cabin for HKG-DXB was overbooked and they were asked whether they would be happy to fly in Y. They have been offered two return J tickets to an Asian destination of their choice, ex Johannesburg to be used within the next 12 months as compensation and naturally, they accepted.

Lots of info on FlyerTalk about this. It seems to be pretty standard EK compensation when denied boarding. EK "Options Voucher". I mentioned it in the thread referred to by JohnK. In all likelihood the pax downgraded there was offered the same deal and refused it.

What's the real pity is that as well as introducing Chauffeur Drive QF didn't also adopt this as part of their "equality" in the QF-EK alliance. ;)

This is the most generous compensation package I have come across. I am sure there will be no problems with the new booking.

I also assume there is a 12 months validity to the voucher

Pity more airlines don't see the merit of this approach to compensation. The passengers feel good about it and would quickly forget the inconvenience. Significantly it costs the airline very little to be this generous because in most cases they are giving away what would be spare capacity. Problem solved; passengers happy; airline happy.

Compare that to QF's approach to compo for involuntary downgrades etc. Shortsighted airline execs just don't get it that passengers are not only left unhappy but they also flood places like AFF to voice their disgust. They are apparently clueless as to the coughulative effect such an approach can have on growing their business.
