I would hope these decisions are based on standard operating procedures and protocols observed by most major airlines?

If a passenger was seriously ill, sure. But the report seems to indicate this was of a much lower level of severity, more someone who just wasn't feeling well ......

I think it happens when there is unlikely to be any further diversion airport for a long period and there is a concern for a case deteriorating or of course if it's urgent. QF A380's medical diversions into HNL twice this month. http://hnlrarebirds.blogspot.com.au/2014/03/qfa11-vh-oqf-a380.html?m=1

I'm pretty sure a doctor friend of mine assisted a case on a flight a few years ago. I will ask him what the procedure was. Don't think they diverted.

Btw interesting to see the aircraft "Charles Kingsford Smith" in Hawaii though Smithy landed at Wheeler not Hickam. Also interesting he was lost somewhere in the Andaman sea in 1935.

There is info on the topic in the Ask the Pilot thread. At QF, the pilot will be consulting with a ground based medical service, but the decision rests with him.
