Emirates, the world's biggest international airline, is increasing its capacity into Perth to meet a 27 per cent rise in business into the Australian market.
From March 31, the airline will replace one of its twice-daily 262-seat Boeing 777-200LRs with the plane's bigger brother, the 354-seat Boeing 777-300ER. This will give it an extra 644 seats a week.
Richard Jewsbury, Emirates' senior vice president commercial operations for Far East and Australasia, told _The West Australian _yesterday that traffic in and out of Perth was strong with "significant growth from the resource market to Africa and the US".
The airline's latest destination is Seattle in the US. Perth passengers can leave late in the evening and arrive in Seattle, with only one short stop in Dubai, at 1.30pm next day.
Mr Jewsbury said traffic growth into Perth would be handled by further "up gauging" of plane types and then possibly a third daily service.
"The A380 is also a possibility when the airport can handle the aircraft," he said.
