just wondered if someone can let me know if i am on the right track re status credits,
i see you can earn status credits on reward flights at the mo,
have plugged all the info & come up with the following

per- syd-dps-mel-per this is a cost of 50,800 points (have no idea if this is good or not)

when working out the credits i see that they are the following
per-syd -5259 = 30SC
syd-DPS - 4596 = 30sc
dps-Mel - 4360 =30
mel- per -1670 =20

total 110

have i read that right?
cheers!

Hate to burst your bubble but you've put an extra 0 on there. It should be 110SCs.

Bahaha!! just shows you shouldn't spend 5 hrs straight reading threads - time for a drink!! - (although there are 5 of us travelling so will get 550 points so will get us well on the way :)

but the question still remains - am i reading the status points right? i have oodles of points - am i better off using them or paying for the flights and getting the extra status credits then upgrading to J ?

If you have loads of points, with the current promotion (whereby you earn commercial SCs for reward seats) - including on business/J, I would be inclined to book reward seats.

Business reward seats seem to be pretty good value (compared to standard economy), and probably the fastest way to earn you SCs.

That coupled with the multi-sector rule changes as of this year with sabre mean that creative routing (like you showed above from a to b via c and back via d) can earn you many more points -- especially from PER where almost everything is above the lowest SC earning threshold too

why would you get 550 SC ?

awesome - thanks for the advice, for some reason it was not allowing me to look at anything other than economy fares despite having enough points - may be the routing/ days will have a play and maybe do a different configuration

to work out a cost of SC is it just the mileage divided by the cost in points? is there a magic number that i need to be looking at - i.e its a bargain if you pay $5 per SC or something ??

Reward Flights are worked out using: (see bold/underlined - from Terms and Conditions)

*To be eligible for this offer, you must book and travel on a Virgin Australia (VA) marketed and operated flight in a Reward Seat Fare Class (X, P or Z) between 13 January and 30 June 2013, and all flights must be booked and ticketed directly by Velocity Frequent Flyer (featuring a ticket number beginning with "795"). Economy Reward Seat bookings will earn Status Credits at the Discount Economy rate, Premium Economy Reward Seat will earn at the Premium Economy rate and Business Reward Seat will earn at the Business rate.

Also I think all sectors are Zone 3 which at the above rate is 20 Status points per sector. ie. total will be 80 status credits for the trip. So with 5 x pax that is 400 SC's. I'll stand corrected if I am wrong.

As for the other part of the question: If you have oodles of points (aren't we related):) Seriously, depending on how many you have maybe you can book J reward for all or some of your pax. (J is 80 points per sector which equates to 320 points per passenger) You can do the maths...:!:

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I think that's slightly out.
PER-SYD = 2041 miles = 20 SC's (in discount economy)
SYD-DPS = 2871 miles = 20 SC's (in discount economy)
DPS-MEL = 2719 miles = 20 SC's (in discount economy)
MEL-PER = 1682 miles = 20 SC's (in discount economy)

That makes it 80 SC's, not 110.

If you're in business, they become 60 each instead of 20. I believe award flights are currently crediting as discount economy for SC's.

*edit*
bolthead beat me to the submit button whilst I was checking mileage ;)

thanks - i realise my error, looked at the KM for the flights not the miles doh!
