Just wondering if anyone has any experience flying Malaysia Airlines, and earning status credits? Recently flew MEL-KL-PEN-KL-MEL economy, and only earned status credits on the KL-PEN-KL leg - Apparently something to do with the booking class I wasn't aware of.
Am planning on flying MEL-KL-CDG-KL-MEL later this year, Business Class - and want to be sure I don't end up in the same boat - i.e. I want these flights to count towards maintaining my Gold FF. There are Business Promo, and standard Business fares available - Will I earn the same status credits on the Business Promo? Or for an extra couple of hundred $$ am I better off booking the standard Business fare?

Thanks. Yeah I have seen that table, but when booking on Malaysia Airlines online - I can see no mention of the booking Class. I'd rather earn the SC than not, but it's a toss up between spending the extra $$ unnecessarily!

You need to bring up the fare rules, the first letter is the fare class.

If "later this year" is after 1 July, be prepared for the "simpler, fairer" (greatly reduced) Status Credit earn compared to the pre 30 June situation. (140 each way).

Yeah, I'm a little confused by that. Travel is in October, so well past the introduction of new rules. But when I look up the earning table - Mel-KL-CDG is around 10,000 miles one way so should equal 240 status credits at the current rate, but the new rate reduces it down to 140? Massive. I thought I read somewhere that the rates were 'mostly unchanged..'

Yep the new QFF program is about moving your business to QF, which is fair I guess. By contrast if you could open a British Airways account, you would get their equivalent of QF Gold tier from these flights alone, and the points you earnt would be 26,000 (enough for 5.5 MEL-SYD flights in economy or 65% of a MEL-SIN [or SYD-BKK/HKG] business class) vs the 15,600 miles you will earn in QF (enough for nearly 2 MEL-SYD flights, or 25% of a MEL-SIN business class flight)!

MEL-KUL-CDG currently actually earns as two separate sectors, as it is not the one flight number all the way through. Current earn wouls be MEL-KUL 3928 miles for 120 SC, KUL-CDG 6495 miles for 160 SC - so 280 each way.

I guess the change is simple - it is exactly half what it currently earns.

That's an interesting proposition. I've previously only flown Qantas for the Bulk of my domestic and international flights - mainly through work, so have retained Gold for a number of years now. But have recently started switching some international flights to CX and domestic to Virgin - Am questioning what's going to be the better FF program in order to retain a Gold tier, switch to Cathay or Virgin completely?? Qantas Business to Europe is so expensive, and if I'm not going to be able to earn the status credits in order to retail my Gold tier with Qantas... I'm all about the status credits at the moment. I have over 300k in points that I'm saving up for award flights next year

I would expect a double status campaign will hit a few inbox's from Tuesday next week, if it hits yours have a look at using some of those points on a status run. You could go for Plat which is effectively two years of Gold for not much expense using a marginal ASA, ie:

TSV-DRW via BNE costs 24000 + $300 in J, earns 140 SC and 5547 points as a SG, which doubles to 280 ;)

So thats 280 SC for a net cost of 18500 + $300 odd.

As a plat you would also earn more on the longer flights with your extra points, helping to make up those spent.

It really boils down to which carrier you are going to use the most often. If you see yourself using MH for a lot of flights, particularly in business class, then joining Enrich maybe the way to go. If you get to Gold status with them, then you'll receive recognition on board CX and QF through Oneworld recognition.

For the same cost of maintaining your QF Gold you could be Virgin Platinum, earning more points and enjoying many more benefits than as a QFF.
If you want to compare to see which program is best for you....drop me a priv message. I know of a secret website that will show you what your QFF activity would look like under another frequent flyer program.

Thanks for the heads up. I cant PM you - not enough posts! I now fly CX for work to HK/CH mainly, and previously Qantas to Europe or USA. But have started some domestic flights on virgin, where I have no status. Not sure that I'll accrue enough flights on virgin to make the switch worthwhile. Am thinking I'm more likely to fly on OW carriers for personal flights.

I'm super confused about ASA, have never booked them, and honestly dont know how, am assuming I cant book them online per a normal flight? I'm not averse to a status run but am in Melb so TSV-DRW via BNE doesn't really work for me - Happy to use up points, so long as I'll end up with enough to take a holiday fully funded by points next year (and use my remaining gold privileges)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I have perhaps missed something or you have some insider knowledge? Can you please elaborate?

For the past few years there has been a mass double status credit campaign done just after Easter, if they are doing one this year you can expect to get an email after Easter if your selected. The campaign has nothing to do with where peoples membership year is at and normally is applicable for bookings from registration until June 30.

Then again they may not do one this year, regardless if I had bookings to make, I would be waiting just in case.

What cabin do you usually fly on CX (economy, premium economy or business), and how many times per year? Also what's your preference for redeeming flights? Do you have credit cards you want to earn points with? All questions that may give more ideas as to what may fit best for you. With the QF changes earning status on partners that compete on routes with Qantas will be more difficult, but there are several options out there that in the end may also give you many more points to redeem with as well (bearing in mind that some oneworld programs you earn less points than Qantas, but also require a lot less points than Qantas).
