Hey guys, so I’ve recently made a booking with Qantas from Sydney to Hong Kong. However due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, I’m a bit reluctant to do the trip. So the question is, will I earn those points and SC if I’m not flying on those flights?
Cheers

Hong Kong is not included in the coronavirus risk zone.

Only way, to earn without flying, is buy your groceries from Woolworths, BWS & BigW, but no SC earn.
contact QF via their call centre and ask about changing flights, deffering, if you can.
If you must, then you have to get there maybe by train from Russia, or another country that has rail links to HKG SAR of China.
No way to earn SC without flying QF or any OW airline, in the past you or I could earn QF SC via some credit cards, but these don't exist anymore.
Contact QF and see about changing (deferring the flights), or cancel and lose some $/points, and fly SQ or BA to SIN, then an airline to DME Moscow, and rail it across the country to China's border, or road it down by bus to as close as you can to the Chinese border.
If they close every land border and Chinese airports, then you are "stuffed".

As others have said, you need to fly the flight to get the points and SCs.

I've earnt QF points from credit card spend at many other stores, staying at hotels, renting cars and the Wellbeing app recently and am reliably informed you can also quickly get points via QF Wine.

Air traffic to/from HKG isn't closed. DME is 7,118 km from HKG and the first page I could find about a train from Moscow states a travelling time of 7 days to Guangzhou, at which point the Hong Kong authorities might be severely restricting entry. As the OP wanted to get to HKG, a land crossing via mainland China is likely to have repercussions for returning to Australia and entering HKG.

I think we can recognise Poochie’s “tongue in cheek” sarcasm when we read it!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If the answer to the OP question was "yes", it would be the end of the QFF program.
To be honest, I fail to understand why this question was asked (as the answer seems obvious).

Wow Pooch you've reached a new level with this one.

You're suggesting to go to Russia to get to HKG by going through China,.. the whole centre of the outbreak.. What are you thinking??!

Now sure, I'd love to do the Trans Siberian like many would, but perhaps not right now.

At any rate the OP was not discussing about how to get to HKG, but concerns about if points and SC would be earned if they were unable to fly the flights booked.

To address the original concern..

as others have said no credit will be given for flights not taken. HOWEVER if QF cancels the flights booked there MAY be an argument for Original Route Crediting of cancelled flights, but QF would also be obliged to provide alternate routing or refund.. in which case no points or SC would be accrued.

So basically fly it to earn it.

QF is different from Velocity where you can earn SC from shopping. QF you fly for your SC. No fly no SC.

Not entirely true (but not very relevant to this thread). There are rare examples of non flying SC earn, such as the ANZ Black Credit Card signup offer of 75 SC. Not sure if that is still around, but it was last year at least.

In general though, the above does hold.

True that was so rare I forgot about it!:D
