My wife is flying into Darwin on Saturday on MH 145 arriving 04:15 and departing on QF 843 at 13:35, it's been a while since I've been to Darwin but I'm assuming there are electronic check in machines and electronic bag drop? If so, would the machines accept my wife's bag at 5 or 6am so that she can take a trip into the city for breakfast?

You could ask MH if they will through check the bag to BNE on QF843 the next day. She'll still need to claim the bag in DRW to clear customs and immigration but it may be easier to convince staff to take the bag rather than being checked in again from scratch.

I didn't notice any auto bag drops there a couple of months ago but they do have airport kiosks. It used to be that they would accept bags for the lunch time flights ex DRW once the last bag had been sent for the last of the early morning departures which was the QF1935 DRW/ASP/PER. Not sure if that's still the case.

There are airport lockers out the front so if the answer is no then she can put the suitcase in a locker then head into town then check in on her return.

Thanks for that. She has decided to go to the Mercure and get some sleep and breakfast, so now have an option if she isn't able to check in the bag.

I arrived on that same flight and was able to check my bag in to QF at 6am, on the proviso that it weighed less than (IIRC) 20kg. If it had been heavier I would have had to wait until 7am for someone else to arrive. The issue was it being too heavy for the sole check in agent.

The bag didn't go through on the belt, by the way. The agent put it behind the counter until later.

QF desk opened at 6.

Confirming for the reference of others no auto bag drop in DRW yet.

For the OP: if sleep is the objective and you've not booked, I'd suggest investigating the Novotel. It's also walking distance from the terminal and is hotel style. The Mecure is resort style with rooms scattered around the pool. Some days the FIFO crew can get a little rowdy. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the pool bar :)
