Earliest possible check-in for international flight and SYD Intl F lounge hours?

Hi all,

I'm travelling from Perth to San Fran in a few weeks. My first leg is Virgin and arrives in SYD at ~7am. My onward to LAX is Qantas and departs ~3pm. I've never tried this before, and was just wondering if I'll be allowed to check-in for my 3pm flight as soon as I arrive at the international terminal (probably around 8am?) and then just hang around in the lounge until my flight? If I can check-in that early, will the F lounge even be open? Is it 24-hour? If I can't check-in that early, are there any other ways I can access the lounge until check-in opens?

Thanks so much for your help.

Pity you weren't flying QF from PER, you would have gotten both BPs.

If you have HLO then do an online check in then you can go straight through. If not you'll probably have to wait til 11am or so to check in.

Gutted! Could I still check-in online like you suggest and then just go to bag drop for my checked stuff?

What was the advantage flying VA first leg?

I'm actually flying out of the country for good, so figured I'd use my Virgin points on a business upgrade for my wife and I as they'll be of little use to me in the US. In hindsight, it may not have even been worth it.

Why doesn't QF allow early check in at SYD? Is it a SYD airport thing or a QF thing? Maybe they don't want WPs to check in 8 hours early to enjoy the F lounge?

From what I understand, in HKG / SIN you are allowed to do early check-in. Even LGW (not LHR) you are allowed to do so on BA flights I believe too...

Who says they don't allow early (ie earlier than 2 hours) check-in? I've checked in at Qantas F counter 5 hours before departure (flying J as WP) and around 3-4 hours prior numerous times. I like to get into the FLounge and settle in to do a few hours work - its a great environment to do so. If the F counters are open, I can't see the difference between 5 hours and the longer period that the OP has.

To the OP: Sorry I can't help with FLounge hours, but I dare say its on the Qantas site but failing that, call the premium line 131 211.

I believe you can check in before the three hours mark if the F check in folks are feeling nice, its only in effect for international flights outside Australia where other arrangements have not been made, locally it seems more flexible.

When it's all said and done, there's a big YMMV on this when you have to check luggage.

As posted it depends upon how nice the F check-in agents are feeling, you can simply check in with your bags and they may be no issue or they may tell you to come back in a few hours.

One thing that is true is that since you have T1 Flounge access in SYD, you would likely have access to to T3 Domestic Business lounge.

At worst, if they knock you back, go get a cappaccino and a muffin and come back, spread your gear comfortably around you and camp in one of the lounge chairs in the F check in area. Or maybe get a nice smelly pizza or similar. Eventually they'll crack. :)

Not so sure that is sage advice - not only would it be a bit rude it might also annoy other pax who are checking in.

I would use the domestic business lounge for a while first as suggested.

I checked in on Monday for a flight to Singapore in First. I was 5 hours early and was told that some changes had occurred in the last few days and that flights could be opened early. I am not sure if this applied to First Flights, premium checkin and or status but the changes were recent as the checkin person checked with a supervisor who confirmed these new arrangements.

Sounds interesting . . . maybe worth a call to find out more. Thanks! :)

Still the F desk asked me to come back later when i tried to check in during the morning for QF1 in May. Yet it seemed that F passengers were being checked in. F passengers judging by the way qantas staff and baggage trolley met them on the footpath out the front of the airport. If there has been a change I suspect it might only apply to first class travel.

It was made as a light remark. See the smilely thingy? Maybe too early?

We have had some semi serious suggestions not dissimilar...

The smiley could either indicate a joke or taking joy in the hilarity of the situation to be caused.

Oh, good grief. OK, no more attempts at humour until I fully understand the "Acceptable use of levity" and the "Read all previous posts so yours won't be taken out of context" policies of AFF. (Pssst, that's also not an entirely serious comment.)

Apologies to all for off topic. I hope the OP has a long and enjoyable sojourn in the FLounge.

Any update to this, especially now that there are at least 3 flights leaving around 1pm including a A380. I think the LAX flight is 4 hours earlier ( I can use the F check in area)
