In the next month I have a visitor coming in to Adelaide flying MEX-LAX-SYD-ADL with QF81 for SYD-ADL, so international transit in Sydney.

My question: Duty free - is it possible to buy in Sydney during the transit? (Adelaide duty free has a poor selection).

Yes - but bottles of liquid > 100ml should only be purchased once on the STD T1 departures level (after going though Transit security).

Correct me if i'm wrong (it does happen now and then :mrgreen:), but given ADL is the end city, and QF81 is only the SYD-ADL flight number not the LAX-SYD-ADL flight number, won't the flight for this particular pax be classed as a domestic flight and therefore ineligible to purchase duty free whilst in Sydney, or is the fact he/she is coming in from LA mean that the SYD-ADL leg is also classed international.

I was under the impression that SYD-ADL on QF81 is only classed as international when the pax are flying SYD-ADL-SIN.

You've got me curious now, love to hear your perspective Serf.

My understanding (and I could be wrong!) is that unless the passenger clears customs in Sydney, then they are still treated as an international passenger and can buy duty free. Havn't tried it though, and don't know of anyone who has. Did have the opportunity in Syd to try it a few months ago though.

It's a simple "International" transit - effectively little different from flying FRA-xSIN-MEL and buying duty-free at SIN or the old days when QF2 flew LHR-xBKK-xSYD-MEL and buying at SYD.

There will be no orange D sticker involved.

Aussie Tim's visitor does not effectively "enter" Australia until ADL.

Thanks for that.

Just goes to prove my old saying that you can work in the industry for years and there's still something new to learn everyday.
