so, went to purchase some booze and cosmetics in HKG last night prior to return to BNE. was told by 2 separate store attendants that anything over 100ml in liquid wasn't allowed for travel to Australia ...

I thought this was odd. I've purchased moisturiser etc for wife from there in the past.

There was no checking of carry on bags at the gate either. By my reckoning, we could have purchased and stuffed it in our carry on and none would have known any different ...

Anyway, first world problem I know. Just a little bit annoyed.

I've heard of stories about surprise liquid checks at gates as people board the plane in HKG, so it's not 100% but there is a risk you could lose the duty free item you bought.

Have had the 100ml gate check at HKG every time when heading to Aus. Including most recently in July where we’d filled water bottles for the kids and had to empty them at the gate before boarding.

Yes, I thought the restriction on bringing +100 ml lags on board at HKG, after d/f, had been in place for a long time.

I believe it be a an Aus gov restriction that has been enforced at the gate in HKG for many years.

What You Can Bring On A Plane

You wont get any debate from me it’s monumentally stupid once you’ve entered the secure zone at the outbound airport. A cynic might suggest it’s to protect Aus arrival duty free stores.......

That's great news if no checks. Was checked 6 months ago. Really irritates me. I've no doubt it's a duty free scam for that monolith you are faced with on arrival into oz.

Keen to see if there's any further reports of no checks at gates. I did around 6 flights via Hong Kong in 2017 and there were checks at the gate every time. Although I'd have to say that the checks weren't very thorough. I'm confident I could have gotten something through if I had tried.

No gate check a couple days ago ex PVG to AU. Seems like there might, indeed, be a rule change!

No gate check this week PEK to SYD either. It seems to be disappearing ...

The liquid limits are monumentally stupid no matter which side of the security check point you're on. There is no sane sensible reason to limit liquids on an aircraft. Period.

Agree.

Also ridiculous that flights to the US and UK do not have the same gate liquid restrictions, who would if anything be under a high threat level than Australia.

No gate check Oct 13, QF30 to Mel. I had over 100ml of cosmetics purchased DF at HKG for my wife. The lady at the shop sealed them in DF bag and said that would be ok.
