Hi all- looking for some help please :)
I'm arriving into Dubai at about 8am on Tuesday and leaving at 3am on Wednesday morning.
We're a young family and have lots of bags. The flight was booked as a multi destination to break the journey back to Aus up a bit. When we arrive, we'll be exhausted and looking to get to bed asap.
Question- can we check bags in straight to Aus with that length of stopover (noting it's a muti destination not just a layover). If so, we'll just stay in the inside the airport hotel.
If we need to pick up bags, can you suggest somewhere that would do a room from

Hi, I think if it all part of the same ticket you can have the bags checked straight through - one of the experts on the forum should be able to confirm.
Re the hotel - a few years ago my wife had a long transit coming from SYD on the way to MAD and we booked a room at the airport hotel in Dubai, which was very comfy and quite reasonable.

Yes DXB has the ability to check bags through with a long transit so you can go carry on only to your hotel if you wish.

Thanks guys- bags were straight through and had a few hours kip in the Premier Inn.
Now for the epic leg back east :-(

i have just booked at the hotel for a transit next year. Apparently someone meets you and takes you to the hotel. I was wondering what would be the appropriate tip for this and if uS$ would be OK, as I won’t have local currency.

I wouldn’t tip at all for this.
I may be oblivious to tipping culture in DXB but I’ve never tipped for anything like this there. Wait staff yes but not much else.

terrific - thanks for that. Tipping always stresses me as I don’t want to do the wrong thing! Haven’t been to Dubai so wasn’t sure ....

Other then the US, almost nowhere has a "tipping culture". It is either "no tips period" (most of asia), "tip if you feel like" or "service charge already added" (most of europe)

Tipping is totally endemic in Africa. Wasn’t when I was growing up. While theoretically it is tip if you like and unlike North America no-one will be rude to you if you don’t, you really need to tip. I am working out my tipping budget for a 30 day trip next year and it will be between $3,000 and $4,000 (but at least I won’t need to tip in Dubai).

I agree about Asia, although I found tips were appreciated by wait staff in Singapore.

Hi, I don’t recall anyone meeting us and taking us to the hotel but the process may have changed. I am sure US$ would be fine as a tip though...

Seriously between $100-133 outlay in tips on average per day?

yes..... that is for two people though. The problem is most of the places we stay at have wealthy Americans and they tip like crazy. Also we have asked for a private vehicle for 6 of the days and I don’t see why the poor ranger should have to miss out when normally he would have 6 people tipping him each day. Apart from the ranger and sometimes a tracker, there is the “butler”and generally for the staff. Often there is someone who does something special for you like running a bath and making towels into swans (OK I am a sucker for that - but you have to reward them :) )

Then when you do the gorilla treks there is your guide, porters, security guards and I assume a driver and we are doing two of those and a golden monkeys trek.

I know we probably end up tipping too much, but these people are not well paid - in the case of the porters I don’t think they are paid at all,. Of course we don’t need a porter, but they are usually ex poachers, so by using them you are getting money into the community. The people are all so lovely I don’t mind tipping anyway and at least the money is going directly to the people not charity administration.

I remember some people we met in Zambia who were there doing some sort of community project and they said that each person working in hospitality in tourism is probably supporting another 10 people. Their salaries are not high and they are very dependent on tips. Working in the remote locations mean the women are often leaving children to be cared for by family and they only see them every few months, So I am very conscious that you want to tip adequately.

we have already had an email from the hotel asking for our flight details and saying someone will meet us at the arrival gate. They don’t guarantee it, in case the airline doesn’t come in where they are supposed to, but said they try to where possible. Maybe it is a new thing -the airport is quite confusing!
