Hi all

I have recently returned London Melbourne with the original booking class being Y. To cut a long story short I ended up in F for the flight. This has been my first major upgrade with QF.

Is this common to have an upgrade to F from Y and if so how many have you had?

Wouldn't that be a triple upgrade? Or did you use points to go from Y to J first?

It is the right time of year for operational upgrades and if you are in the right location... and the stars align then always possible.

Very nice! Only recently had my first upgrade on QF so really can't say how common a triple upgrade is

Just awesome, I hope they had your size in First Class pyjamas. ;)

There are times when the long story is welcome, this is one of them. (Just so we can drool and hope the stars align for us when we travel.)

LOL yes they had my size in PJs other wise wouldnt have flown specially in those common grey ones :D.

No I didnt use any points so guess taking into consideration Premium then yes a Triple :D :D

Back in the 90's when Qantas and Ansett ran three classes domestically, I used one of the status based certificates to upgrade from Economy to Business.

Upon check-in for a QF flight MEL-PER I was give a BP for First Class. (My travel associate was a bit miffed as he was still in Business.)

On another Saturday evening flight, I used another certificate to upgrade MEL-BNE and was given a First Class BP for 1D - but that doesn't really count as it was a 737 and that evening ran economy from row 3 back - canning any Business class on that flight (rows 1-2 were fixed First, rows 3-7 were convertible).

I've only had one op-up and it was a so called double-upgrade from Y to J on NRT-SYD.

Was handed a boarding pass for 1A at check-in. It was much appreciated. :)

Never had an op up. Thought i was guarenteed when my Per-Sin flight was oversold and nothing! My Sin-Per flight is oversold also so fingers crossed.

OK well the short long version of proceedings as follows.

Originally booked an economy ticket earlier in the year in order to return home urgently for a family medical emergency and economy was the only option at reasonable cost.

I was able to move one of my other return flights in J for the leg back to Australia as I generally book London - Melbourne return (Much Cheaper way of doing it.)

Normally I fly QF2 from London to Sing then QF10 Sing - Melb to take advantage of additional status credits combined with a tad more time in the lounge to shower etc and ofcourse complete the duty free shopping to keep the other half happy.

Well anyaway back on topic I received a phone call on the evening prior to departure to see if I could swap over to QF10 all the way. As a responsible frequent Flyer I agreed to do so, on the basis that they could get me in 71D all the way. The good lady from Qantas went and checked and called me back with the bad news that, unfortunately they couldnt do that but they could offer me an isle seat if I wanted BUT in Business class. I reluctantly accepted :D.

Upon arrival at Heathrow all went smoothly and I gladly accepted my shiney J class Boarding pass and headed styaright to the F lounge.

Once at the F lounge I got talking to the host and said how pleased I was with QF giving me the upgrade. I was surprised when he asked for my boarding pass some 5 minutes later and elated when he presenetd me a new one. Sorry Sir we hope you dont mind but we have moved you from 12F to 3K. Would this be acceptable?

Well I think the poor man almost lost his hands as I gladly accepted the newer shinier boarding pass:D

And may I say what a great crew we had on board and it was a very enjoyable experience :D

So keep hoping one just never knows what is around the corner ar the next check in :D

Thank you Qantas

Thanks for that, it is a great story and shows the benefits of being polite when changes are sought by the airline.

I was OP-UPped from award Y to F on MAS from KUL-BNE a few years ago.

I handed over my boarding pass at the transfer desk to check the gate number and was handed back 1C. Even the dude at the counter said "it's your lucky day - we'll have to move you into First Class".

My Japanese girlfriend at the time, who was flying back to Tokyo (in Y) and whose points we had used for used for the awards, was not as happy for me.

There's no way I'd pay a first/business premium for the MAS product. They cut off the Dom Perignon after 1 glass (before take-off), no seconds on the caviar and the meal was not at all memorable. And the German dude beside me knocked a glass of DP all over me making me smell like a brewery which may be desirable at the Summernats but not going through customs.

Eons ago, QueenCorio and I were on BNE-FRA; at reboarding in SIN we were asked to wait a moment before being offered op-up to J with an apology, we weren't seated together but across the aisle. Is that a daily double?
