Hi all, heading from MEL to SYD in a few weeks, and noticed the 787 is operating JQ27 so was looking at getting that flight. Just wondering what differences there from catching a normal domestic flight, seeing as this one uses the international terminals at both ends. Specifically, I presume no passports required? Departure/arrival cards? Duty free? Any pitfalls apart from a bit more time required at each end for some extra formalities?

Cheers.

Well worth it..

Better lounges...

A little more formality...

No passports needed.

The joy of listening to a 1/3rd of the flight whinge about how they didn't know the flight departed from an international terminal.

They blame jetstar

No duty free, and and it can take some time to get your photo ID checked on arrival.

The big downfalls are LAG restrictions and an ID check on either end, which if you're not in a hurry are not really that onerous. There is "D" lanes which get you out past AQIS / Customs after baggage collect which allow you to avoid inspection queues.
When I've done such flights I've taken my passport with me (and quite a few others do to), but it's not required and any gov't issued ID is fine.

Just make sure that immi in MEL stamp the D sticker on your boarding pass before you proceed, otherwise immi at SYD will get upset.

Of course the big advantage is the lounges, J Lounge access if you're QP / SG and F Lounge access if you're WP...

As mentioned, you need to arrive earlier to account for increased amounts of people. You need government issued ID of some kind, as this needs to be linked to your BP (and don't discard this when you get on the plane as you'll need it to leave the airport at the other end). You wont be eligible for duty free, but it's for the most part a rip off anyway. You will get access to Business or First lounges as status allows, a significant step up on their domestic counterparts. You get to fly the 787 :p

Having done the SYD/MEL direction only - lounge is a vast improvement, and on ARR in MEL the international terminal was deserted- so easy to get a taxi!

Thanks all, have booked with price beat. Was mostly to experience the 787. Sounds like a bit of extra time is the main thing to take into account. Look forward to it.

I think Jetstar has a Hobart to Sydney route that departs from the international terminal of Hobart. Is mobile phone check in available on that route ?

LOL - the international terminal with no international flights!

My first ever JQ flight many many moons ago was through that terminal, complete with the oldest immigration primary line in the world and baggage search benches

The Government issued ID must be a valid photo ID eg drivers licence, 18+ card, or some states have a birth certificate in the form of a photo ID card. Drivers licences from overseas countries including New Zealand are not acceptable so nationals of those countries must have their passport.

Dreamworld membership cards & ID cards for social and or sporting clubs such as Arnhem Club or Brisbane Lions etc are not considered valid forms or Government ID's.
