Good evening frequent flyers. I have a few questions about upgrades on Qantas domestic upgrades from discount economy to business. I have never done one before and looking to do so later in the year.

1. When upgrading using points do you get lounge access?

2. Do you get to the Y seat catering as part of the upgrade? Or would i be stuck with the Y meal catering?

3. Whats the chances as a nothing bronze to get a domestic upgrade? I'm guessing zilch to none. But i'll try. I'm flying Sydney - Adelaide on a sunday night 18:50 flight.

I understand that status earn, points earn and fare rules still apply to the original fare that was purchased.

1. Yes
2. If you upgrade in advance online, you get J catering guaranteed. If you upgrade on departure in the lounge (if you have Qantas Club access) then J catering is often "not assured".
3. Depends on the flight, SYD-ADL on a Sunday should be reasonably quiet - but all you can do is try!

Remember that unless you also hold Qantas Club status you'll only be able to register for the upgrade more than 24 hours in advance. You do this online under your bookings.

If there is also classic award availability then your upgrade will be confirmed instantly. If not, you can go onto a waitlist to have the flight confirm closer to the flight departure (if there ends up being availability).

You'll get full business class benefits including the catering and lounge access (along with one guest). You'll earn points and status credits with the original fare like you mentioned.

I've personally had 100% success over the years getting domestic upgrades when I've wanted one - even when I was bronze (although it's been a long time since I was bronze). You might not get it straight away, but keep an eye out over a few days and something might pop up.

Hi nanks85,

1. You should get access to QP or J lounges where available.
2. J catering is given if upgrade is requested T-24 before departure. At least IME.
3. If there's an upgrade available and can be confirmed, IME it's allocated straight away. If you get wait listed or whatever for an upgrade, you'll be at bronze level priority.

Hope this helps.

Do some searches about various routes and planes, some J offerings are really not worth it IMO depending on 1) Flight duration 2)Time of day and 3)type of plane.

No i don't hold Qantas Club Membership. I fly once or twice a year and thee cost for it isn't viable. I will be putting my request in a couple months time as i'm not flying until November. Still a little short of points before i can request my upgrade.

I said i was flying on a sunday night. But i just checked and it's a tuesday flight at 18:50 Syd- Adl. Got my days mixed up. I would imgaine a tuesday night would be quiet.

I've already booked this flight a while back. QF743 is the flight. 18:50 ex Syd. Don't see myself doing any major international flying till later on in life. So i figure a may as well use some points around australia.

These days passengers can also do ODU with points via the next gen kiosks. If it is available an upgrade with points button will display at check in. If already checked in you can enter you details and a menu with several different options will come up with one of those is upgrade with points they can also upgrade then.

Assuming you mean the 18:40 flight (QF743)...

Every Tuesday 18:40 flight in November currently has 3 upgrade seats available. If you had enough points then it'd be confirmed instantly :)

Of course this may change closer to the date.

Yes, but you still must be eligible to ODU.

Only Qantas Club and higher are eligible to do this.

Yes thats the one. 18:40 QF743 november 20th. Kinda sleepy while posting tonight. Damm i am 6k short for this upgrade. Myself and Mrs Nanks85 will be travelling.

Don't think i will get 6k in points for another couple months. I know can open a credit card for bonus points. But the misses won't approve as one credit card is enough in her eyes. Might have to ask a family member for a loan in points. Thank you for being able to find out what is avaliable.

Was able to upgrade with a family points transfer tonight. Thank for everyones help. :D

One last question. Does my luggage allowance increase to the 32 kg allowed for business? Or does it stay to the original 23 kg economy fare that i have?

Good stuff. :) Everything about the flight will be business (priority check in, priority boarding - if it works, QF is notoriously inconsistent with this, J lounge access, catering, baggage allowance) except for FF points and SC earning, which will remain at the economy levels originally booked. Enjoy the flight, and beware, you may get addicted!

Is anyone able to tell what beers are on offer in the domestic business lounge and what sparkling/champange wine is avaliable for liver consumption. Looking forward to trying out this lounge for the first time.

James Squires, quite good wine selection and spirits if that's your poison.

Is it worth it to upgrade to J for 1hr flight from OOL to SYD
I have checked online and it costs 8000 points but how should I value them?

The "cost" of points earned on personal ATO bill ---- 8,000 x 0.43% = $34.40
or the opportunity cost, if I save those 8000 towards an Int J redemption ----256,000 is worth about $7000 = $218.75.
or the opportunity cost, if I value an Int J redemption at a more realistic $3000 ----256,000 is worth about $3000 = $93.75
or simply the difference in Y v J fare ---- $495-$116 = $379.00

or should I just sit down the back and spend the $34 on a nice red when I get home????
