Domestic award upgrade

I'm looking to book a domestic economy ticket and upgrade using points to business

My understanding is that as long as there is a classic J award ticket available it will confirm immediately but the Qantas chat agent said it goes into a queue and could take up to T-12 hrs before the flight?

Any suggestions on the best way forward? Ideally looking to get a definite J class seat (and there are classic awards available on qantas website) but wanted to get the sectors from the cash economy ticket
 
Yes for domestic, if U exists, an upgrade or award should confirm right away. I think what the agent probably meant that if you have to waitlist for the award (no U open) then yes, it could open up up to X hours before the flight.
 
I don't understand why you would do this?

OP may be travelling for work and their company travel policy is restricted to Y for domestic (if so I feel your pain OP..)

Sorry my confusion was from the "award" in the subject line. I thought the OP was suggesting to redeem an award seat in Y then upgrade again with points. I realised shortly after my post. carry on :)

I did explicitly say award (U) seats were available to book on the website however the agent stuck to his position that an upgrade request made after the economy ticket was booked would be wait listed rather than instantly confirmed. I guess his information was incorrect?

That's not correct for domestic. For international yes. Not for domestic if there's U then it should clear.

And if it doesn't a call should get it sorted out.
 
I've had a couple of domestic upgrade requests not clear and needed to call. Best to get on the phone immediately!
