So next year, in March I need to leave DOH and arrive in SYD, with the most checked luggage possible, at the cheapest price. I will be Qantas Plat by then.

So far, DOH > SYD with QR in Y (ha! its T or N, no qff SC earn, jerks) is something ridiculous like 2k usd in cheapest economy, giving me 50kg of luggage. (I am also returning, but leaving permanently shortly after).

So, thats the benchmark. 2k for 60kg DOH > SYD.

Ideas to get more to syd for less? (freight is stupid expensive and most of it is diving kit that doesnt freight well re customs clearance etc)

My idea:

DOH > LHR > JFK on a ba ticket in premium econ, giving me 3 x 32kg. 1150usd
JFK > SYD qf for 2.5kusd, premium econ (might try to swing a biz points upgrade), giving me 3 x 32kgs. or biz award for 128k points + 436usd. For a nice healthy SC earn of probably around 250 SC or so.
Then get a Y QR flight SYD > LHR (carryon only) and skip the last leg DOH>LHR, for 600aud.

Tied first is cost/baggage second qantas sc earn third I guess comfort in the mix too, ideally premium econ.

Ideas (as if mine isnt crazy/stupid enough).

Sorry, the main issue is the lugagge - if i found a way to get DOH > SYD with 96kg (3x32kg) for a reasonable price, I would.

There is 0 chance I will credit anything to QR, ever. There points system is a sham, I want the least dealings with QR possible (I live in qatar currently).

thanks for the link

Not answering your question but I also have issues/don't understand QR checked luggage rules

Have a 280K award booked with the last 2 legs on QR. 3 x 32KG on all other legs with JAL/AA/IB but have to comply with 50K for QR. It probably won't be an issue for us but don't really understand how our allowance can be virtually halved on the same ticket

Maybe it's the most significant carrier rule?

It's common in middle East carriers this 40/50/60 kg bs. Emirates, Sri Lankan, Oman air, all the same. Total cough. A lot to do with lack of decent laws about it in Australia and other countries.

@fifo how much luggage do you need to carry?

Honestly at the point of considering flying a family member syd to doh to take a 30kg bag back for me, cheaper than shipping rates, or comparable at least.

@fifo
Have you considered buying a “comfort seat” ticket.

Comfort seat or sometimes called extra seat ticket comes with its luggage allowance. But without the taxes, surcharges and “fines”.

What’s you luggage allowance on DOH-SYD on QR in Y?. Do you get extra luggage allowance as a OWE? - I think you do. Maybe an extra piece of allowance says “pieces” or an extra 20kg if allowance is kg

1Y + 1 comfort seat in Y should net you 60kg in luggage allowance plus maybe another 20kg as a One World Emerald. Maybe 80kg. Comfort seats not eligible for OWE extra.

Or as you say - head via USA

I understand cost is a factor

Great idea, I'll look into it.

The internet says Qatar offer a exst and cbbg, extra seat and cabin baggage. I'm willing to be it's a nightmare to book though, being qatar airways!

You are correct 're the luggage allowances. It's pitiful!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Most airlines require Extra seat to be manually done. Make sure you get the extra seat adjacent to you. I’ve been burnt in the past when my extra seat was in the opposite side of the aircraft

Apparently Qatar Airways allows you to buy an extra seat for a 75kg musical instrument carried onboard. I wonder if I buy this extra seat I can bring my roller bag full of every piece of steel I have (my stuff is all diving kit. I have about 12 regulators alone that are 1 - 1.2 kg each) onboard and put it in the seat next to me. Hmm....

As well, I would hope that if i did this, I would then get the 30kg allowance for this seat.... taking me to 30 + 30 + 20 + 75 = 155 kg total. + wife 30 +20 = 205 kg total for both of us. All for only about 5kusd return! (2 Y returns and one Y one way on this route when I want to fly, assuming the extra seat is full cost)

Extra seat is full cost less any taxes and govt surcharges usually charged to the passenger not the seat
You get the seat + checked luggage + cabin allowance + cabin meals usually + extra space

And usually QF points and SC

Not on QR

But have done on AA,MH,SQ,QF
SQ was easiest to deal with

Have not done since 2016 as we could fly J

You might get asked why you want extra or comfort seat - just say you need the extra space

Do you (or anyone else) know if QR has the same policy as most oneworld airlines of if a oneworld emerald books with two people on the one PNR, we would both get the upgraded luggage allowance?
for example, DOH > SYD myself oneworld emerald + wife, booked at same time on same PNR, checkin together, we should both get 30 + 20kgs? Its stated on the BA website as below, but can't find similar for QR.... i've never tried it (myself and wife rarely travel together and if we do, we usually arent trying to lug a bunch of bags!

"
Gold/oneworld
Emerald
One additional checked bag in any travel class
For everyone in your booking, except on hand baggage only (Basic) fares*
A weight allowance of 32kg (70lb) per checked bag
"

@fifo
Any entitlement to extra checked baggage is limited to the status holder only.

An airline might extend this to other travellers within the same booking or PNR, however this is not universal across the OW airlines.

For example Qantas luggage allowances are in a per individual passenger basis only irrespective of who else is travelling with them on the same PNR

I wish there was a chart of this for all OW carriers.....

Anyone with any experience on this on QR?

Wouldn't your wife be on a separate pnr if she's flying Aust/DOH/Aust & you'd just be flying DOH/Aust? Otherwise you'd have to buy a one way ticket for her to position Aust/DOH then another one with you DOH/Aust.

What about using QF points for yourself ex DOH to the US assuming QR have the piece system ie 2 pcs then you *should* be allowed a 3rd piece as a OWE.

You'd need to call QF to book ex DOH as can't be done on website.

The best ppl to ask would be QR checkin staff at DOH so it may he worth a special trip to the airport to clarify direct with them.

No use calling reservations to be told one thing then arrive at the airport to find out it's a lesser amount.

Misunderstanding, we both live in Doha and will be flying DOH > SYD > DOH. A month later we will then be flying DOH > ??? when we depart for good. My sisters wedding + dropping off our stuff is the goal of the trip.

I'm willing to fly thru the USA if I really have to, looking at all options to avoid this ridiculous trip DOH > LHR > NYC > LAX > SYD. I'd get 2 x 32kgs DOH > LHR > NYC (With BA) then, 3 or 3 32s depending on what class I fly NYC > SYD, i'd probably look to do a QF award for this unless there was some great sale on.
