Does Checkin time affect Upgrade chances? If so, how to optimise?

Quick question for the experts :)
Next week I get to benefit from the generosity of status matches etc. for a rare Hilton hotel stay as a gold member, which will be in Adelaide for my anniversary. Would your experiences indicate if there is a better time than others to check-in for any possible upgrades? We will be heading into Adelaide and I have lined up a tour at Haigh's chocolates at 2pm (I think). Better to try and check in before or after do you think? (realising that checking in before 2pm is prior to the normal check-in time).

IME upgrades are normally processed and decided prior to your checking in. You can check your booking on the HH website but as an example (I'm Diamond), I checked my Perth Hilton booking in a lower level room about midnight the day prior and saw myself in a suite. I checked again about 10 AM on the day and saw I'd dropped a level (but still an upgrade over what I'd booked). My interpretation of that (and it may well vary from hotel to hotel - I don't know) is that you are upgraded (if you are going to be) the previous night, but may still get gazumped by a revenue booking after that.

And FWIW, I had a stay Adelaide a few months ago and got an upgrade to a room on the top floor which may have been marginally larger than a standard room, but not much. Good luck, happy anniversary, and I hope you score a great room! :)

I've stayed at the Adelaide Hilton a few times as a Diamond and always receive an Executive room ( I always book the cheapest room because I'm cheap!).

The last time we stayed there I did the on-line upgrade request for a Junior Suite for $57 (maybe I'm not so cheap after all :)) which was successful.

I think the exec rooms are pretty much the same as a normal room but on a higher floor. As it's your anniversary you may want to blow an extra $57, but I have to warn you that while I think it's worth $57 for a special occasion, it ain't that flash, but I'm sure you'll score a few brownie points :).

A final tip. As a gold you can have your complimentary breakfast in the restaurant, which in my opinion is significantly better than the exec. lounge. I suggest you confirm this at check-in. Non-status guests who book an exec room have to take breakfast in the exec. lounge but Gold & Diamond can use the restaurant.

Enjoy your stay.

Thank you to you both for the insights and kind remarks! As much as I love our 3 young kids, a few nights without them will no doubt be relaxing whatever room we end up with :) I might look into the Junior Suite though - from trying to search previously, I couldn't seem to identify exactly how that might differ from the exec. rooms. Any comments on that froggerADL?
Thanks again!

Thanks again!

The Junior Suite is quite a bit bigger, the bathroom is better (although I like the bathrooms in the exec. rooms) and it has a walk-in robe. It also has a "lounge" area but it is all one room.
