Hey gang,

In a week or so I'm flying back to Brisbane from Copenhagen via LHR, HKG and SYD. On the way over here I made QFF silver which I am lead to believe entitles me to 32kg of baggage on international flights. The first leg from CPH to LHR is a QF flight number on BA metal which means I will be checking in for the whole journey with BA. The rest of the flights are QF flight numbers on QF metal. My question is are BA going to be cool with letting me check in a bag that weighs more than 23kg? I don't have my QFF silver card yet if that is going to make any difference.

Thanks!

Re: Does BA recognise extra baggage allowance for QFF frequent flyers on QF codeshare

The answer is probably "No", but worth trying. BA don't waive excess baggage fees for Qantas FF'ers as a rule, but I have heard of some people having them waived.

At worst, you would be up for a 23kg-32kg upgrade fee with BA - £40 (ie, somewhere around $60). Keep in mind that BA have no limit on the weight of carry-on luggage ... so that could also be a solution (BUT - you won't get a chance to return those items to your checked luggage).

If you've just made Silver, then call Qantas and get them to delete and re-add your FF number. There have been several recent reports of new status not being reflected correctly on older bookings.

Someone might have more positive information for you, but that's my experience with BA.

Is this all on the one booking? Also, when was it booked?

For tickets booked before May 19th 2011, BA have permitted the larger allowance for connecting flights; fot ticket on/after this date, the new "most Significant Carrier" rule applies.

If beforehand then this applies: (British Airways - Commitment to Passenger Service)

Free baggage allowance that can be checked into the hold
...

Notes:
i) Passengers will be allowed the most generous allowance on connecting services. ...
In either case & if on the one ticket then the QF PS allowance QF LHR-HKG in economy of 32kg (70lb) should apply.

BA have a new rule that on multi sector flights that you get the most generous sector's baggage allowance across the entire flight. As all you flights are QF numbered, you should get the QF baggage allowance. But yes, call your FF service number, and do the FF number removal / re-add to ensure the BP prints your Silver status. Also log onto your QF account and print out the "Your Summary" page, which should show your Silver status.

Good luck and enjoy the flight, no matter what happens. Also let us know how you went.

My query is (and perhaps it has already been answered), is whether carrier specific additional allowances due to FF status is covered by this too. My understanding was that it only referred to the carrier's limits for the class of travel.

I could be wrong, but it's a question that would be interesting to know the answer to.

I understand that query being in relation to the "MSC" IATA rules.

The GDS's are supposed to ascertain the MSC and it's baggage limits at the time of booking and record/apply that to all segments of the booking. So each carrier has needed to file their free allowances (and excess baggage charges) with the GDS (or related system) database(s).

Whether the carriers have filed the additional allowances for thier elites is an interesting question.

The idea of the allowance being standard the PNR is to take the onus away from the check-in agent. Certainly there are going to be some disgruntled passengers if their elite allowances are not taken into account.

If I ever travelled with enough baggage to run the gauntlet of these rules¹ and had problems in this respect then would be arguing that the booking's MSC allowance calculation was incorrect.

¹ Aside from that, shoot me!

Re: Does BA recognise extra baggage allowance for QFF frequent flyers on QF codeshare

I just got back from a cycling trip Prague to Budapest where I flew in to Prague and out through Budapest. As you would expect the London-Prague and Budapest-London legs were on BA metal but I made a point of ensuing that they were QF code share flights. Total ticket price was on a saver fare and about $2,100 return. At both Perth and Budapest I didn't have a problem with the baggage allowance. I had two bags. One was 15kg and the other 17kg. This was a bike bag and was considered oversized baggage (noting that it was within the dimensions required by Qantas for bike bags). At both Perth and Budapest the check in agent rang their supervisor and had the baggage charges waived (without me having to request them to do so which was a pleasant surprise). I am WP. I found the whole process smooth and easy. I was expecting some problems taking my bike but was pleasantly surprised that there were no problems and that both bags turned up on time, seemingly before others with priority luggage tags and that my bike was undamaged.

Off topic, I had an op up to Business on the Perth-Singapore leg and an upgrade to premium economy on the London-Singapore leg so overall I am very happy with Qantas and feel like I got great value for money considering I booked on a saver fare.

Regardless of the rules and whose job it is to do what, its a lottery at the end of the day !Just be nice to your check in staff !

Hi All,
I think Mal is correct. Whilst MSC rules seem to now apply for checkin luggage, it seems to apply for the class of travel, NOT the FF program benefits (ie the carrier FF Status).

I am travelling to Manila soon SYD-HKG QF then HKG-MNL CX both in economy. 23kg is the economy limit for QF, 20kg for CX. Whilst I am Gold FF with QF giving me 32kg allowance, on contacting CX Sydney they told me they would honour the class limit of 23kg under MSC, but not the QFF program benefit of 32kg (Bummer! I was hoping for the extra checkin limit for myself!)

Last year I did some air pacific flights and both QF and FJ callcenters told me baggage allowance was determined by the carrier's flight# you are ticketed under. This also means their lost baggage policy and FF benefits.

Have things changed?

Search for "Most Significant Carrier"!

Thanks for all the answers. Yes, it is all on the one booking and it was booked back in December. I guess I will just turn up in CPH and see how I go. :S

Re: Does BA recognise extra baggage allowance for QFF frequent flyers on QF codeshare

An update of sorts. My bag came to 22.7kg so I can't be sure whether I would have been allowed the 32kg or not. I suspect not. BA did recognise my OW Ruby status without me needing to do anything. I snaked an op-up to premium economy on the LHR-HKG which was rad. Too bad it meant I got a decent "night's" sleep and now I'm in HKG feeling like it's morning at 6:20PM. Haha!

Hi All,
Like Butfli, a similar update on my travels....Syd-MNL via HKG with QF and CX. Checkin box (not luggage) weighed 27kg (so 4kg over the normal 23kg), box straight to Manila as was interlined (I think correct terminology) without me rechecking in HKG, and as I expected no extra charges from CX....now, charges from PI customs...thats another story!

This is quite interesting... I have been booked QF flight numbers on QF ticket on BA metal... Should I be getting the Plat allowance as if I am flying QF?

It is not an official benefit and the t&cs exclude such flights. In practice, you never do know your luck.

It would be strange to happen that I go over the allowance but as passenger on QF flight number on QF ticket I would be very annoyed if I didn't get the QF WP allowance... There must be a lot of pax who have issues with this now I think of it :)

There is the occasional post here on the topic. The official line is:
Qantas Baggage | Checked Baggage Allowance
All Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club member allowances apply only to travel on Qantas operated jet flights with a QF flight number on your ticket.

It is a gotcha that I don't think is well publicised.
