Do you do anything to prepare for a plane crash?

Is there anything in your routine that you do in case of plane crash?

I keep my shoes on for takeoff and landing, that's the only thing really.

My phone is usually in my pocket because I use it in flight and after landing, as is my wallet. 99% of the time my passport would be in the overhead so that's no use.

Apparently the best thing to carry is a smoke hood but that seems extreme.

I try to remember to say a prayer to St Jude (Thaddeus), the Catholic Church's patron saint of lost causes, although really it's in advance because nothing has happened yet.

The chances of anything untoward happening are however statistically tiny.

Seat belt done up tight, feet flat on ground, passport in pocket when in International and ALWAYS an aisle seat.

My shoes are on (possibility of having to walk through glass etc, burning fuel).

Yes, I do all of these things consciously in case of a mishap on take-off and landing.

I do do the same too,

My shoes stay on, and my phone, wallet and passport usually stay with me until after take-off. I usually know where the exits are (and are usually seated there internationally). :)

I always sit up straight facing forward and uncross my legs. I cant remember where I heard this but if your body is at an angle and there is some kind of impact injuries can be worse. I do this for every take off and landing and I do get a slight sense of ridiculousness/paranoia but cant not do it!
I like the passport in pocket tip, thanks

I always brush up on water/land emergency landings in the safety card, as different aircraft allow different exits in either case. Such as, Q400 in water I'd need to remember the ditching dam.

Same here, apart from the aisle seat. I'd never though of it but it does make a lot of sense!

Seat belt on low and tight, sitting straight in the seat. Protect your writing hand and head but not necessarily in that order.
Aisle seat and don't open a door if there is water up to the window (got that one from Skywest that is now Virgin owned).
Shoes on until you get to the slide. Forget your carry on.

Shoes on always unless we're at cruising altitude (and even then I only take them off when sleeping) and I keep my wallet, passport and phone within arms reach.

Unless it's the middle of summer I also always have warm clothes with me.

I have my passport in a PacSafe holder around my neck. It is always on when flying international. If the worst happened I could go through immigration again and use my credit cards for a hotel.

I do know where the exits are and how many rows away. I always listen to the safety briefing and know where my life preserver is, just in case.

Hope it never happens but if it did I'm out of there ASAP with the view that there's nothing in my luggage worth losing my life over.

Also don't open a door or window if there is smoke or flames visible on that side.

I hadn't thought about this issue until I read the report of the Asiana crash and then this thread. I don't take a handbag when travelling internationally, but keep my passport and wallet zipped into a pocket in my hand baggage, which is always under the seat in front so as to be accessible during the flight and because I am too short to reach the overhead lockers. I always choose the window seat. My usual travelling clothes have no pockets but I wouldn't leave passport or wallet in the seat pocket in case of theft and because I'd more easily forget them. Also I often leave putting shoes back on until after landing as once people start to move into the aisle there's more room to reach down to tie the laces.

It seems I may need to rethink my habits in case of a crash.

As the plane comes in to flare just before landing i always tighten the seat belt one last time, shoes are always on and sit up straight to prepare myself for whatever... And yes phone, wallet and passport on me... I sit by the window always so the aisle thing isn't for me, but don't mind taking a quick row count to exit during the safety briefing...

If i knew we were having a problem prior to landing i might take all my memory cards and stuff out of my cameras/hdd out of computer and try to put into a plastic bag etc to save my pics etc, but the electronic hardware and clothes and all that stuff could stay in the plane...

I'd have to weigh up on landing the danger of the situation and what shape i was in as to whether i would stick around and help others who maybe hadn't prepared themselves before hand and lost the plot (which would be most i imagine)...

Same as our helicopter briefing. shoes on, glasses off(even sunglasses). Sit up straight, feet flat on floor. Seat belt tight. Carry nothing if there is an evacuation, the aircraft may not be orientated in the "normal" position.

Golden rule for me and all of my family – Shoes – not just shoes but STURDY FULLY ENCLOSED shoes ...... It does my head in whenever I see NUMMIES getting on any plane in thongs / flip flop .......plus women in strappy high heels ....ladies really.... you look great ...... but come on .....if you ever need to get out of a plus hundred tonne broken / melting aluminium coke can in hurry good luck to you ......

Other things to wear ..... wherever, possible denim jeans and at least a long sleeve cotton shirt – if possible a jacket nearby also .....passport (Int) driver licence (Dem) and two widely accepted credit cards in a clothing pocket.

Re NUMMIES a word of warning ...... if I am ever in an emergency disembarking situation and a NUMMIE blocks my path by trying to retrieve their luggage , getting on an ill-fated plane will be the least of their concerns.

I again saw today, just like in Indonesia some years back, NUMMIES with significant luggage as they moved from the burning craft ........... TOOLS!

Glasses off would be a problem. I can't see the ground without them.

Okay, I should have said I leave my glasses off for the take off until seat belt sign goes out and off for the landing until we at least exit the runway.
Having glasses with you for an evac is very sensible:)

Proper lace-up shoes, make sure the seatbelt is done up tight. Always wear long pants in case a trip down the slide is required.

Other than that, nothing. I always have my passport in the seat pocket, so I could grab it if something happened, although every chance I would not have the time. I don't think it would matter much anyway if I didn't have it.

I do always make a note in my mind when over water to not inflate the jacket until outside the aircraft if it ever were to come to that. I have no desire to drown in a tin can!
