Do they still offer upgrades on non-upgradeable fares?

Last year we were called 2 days before our flight from SYD-LAX and offered an upgrade from Discount Economy (red-e-deal) to Business using our FF Points. I was QF Gold, and husband QF Silver. Of course we accepted the offer, particularly as it was on the A380.

We are heading to the US for holidays again in October this year, and with both of us now QF Gold, I am wondering if they are still making offers to people on non-upgradeable fares to use their points to upgrade?

We have been allocated good seats in economy - row 52 on the way out, and 51 on the way back - so it's not the end of the world if we don't get an upgrade, but as we have the points sitting there and it has happened before we are hoping we do get that call again :)

Has anyone been offered this recently on the A380 flights from SYD-LAX ?

I don't think this is happening much anymore as loads on the flights have been improving.

On my last A380 trip to Europe and back, not only was I not allowed to upgrade my cheapie ticket, but there wern't any seats free in PE or J to upgrade to.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess we will prepare ourselves for economy then ... the upgrades were awesome while the loads were lower, but I'm not going to wish another recession on the economy.
