Do I need a boarding pass to go to a gate at T2/T3 Sydney airport?

I read somewhere that you don't need a boarding pass to go to a gate for domestic terminals. Is this true?

I have a relative visiting from Melb, and I've been charged with picking him up. I also have a free lounge pass from my credit card which I have no use for, so I figured if I don't need a boarding pass, then I'll hit up a lounge for a free lunch while waiting for my relo to show up.

No BP required to go to the gates at domestic terminals. But you may need a BP to use your lounge pass.

Concur, boarding pass not required at Australian domestic terminals, you just need to clear security. Lounges and/or the T&Cs of the pass may have their own conditions about needing a boarding pass for a flight.

As said, no BP to go through security, although (flame suit on) I do fancy the idea like the USA. Say your goodbyes landside then enter the sterile area

Won't happen easily - the shop/concessions airside would see a large drop in revenue which would affect the airport owners' revenue.

Agree but other countries deal with it. That word ‘improved security’ seems to float around a lot when it comes to other annoyances like ID to travel but not money it seems.

No boarding pass required to enter domestic terminal. But it's likely you aren't getting into the lounge without a booked flight.

Well that sucks. I was hoping to enjoy my time going to the airport for the first time.

Why, so this your first time to visit the airport, you are not a frequent flyer, you don't have any status (that I can see) you haven't bought a ticket, you want to occupy space and a lounge that other people have paid good money to have an entitlement to use <redacted>

Sorry serfty, don't know how to respond to your "conversation". I apologise to you and members for my extreme comments, however I do not agree with the actions of the OP so am unable to apologise to them

Regarding getting in the lounge, if it is quiet, you most likely won't get in as they will try to match with your non-existent flight. If it is busy, they may just "assume" you are on a flight and let you through on viewing the pass. At both Sydney and Melbourne, both Qantas and Virgin have just sited my card, but Adelaide for example, every-time bar one they have scanned it to verify a flight.

Actually on reflection, give you have a free pass, it may be a bit more awkward than a member card being flashed.

You could give it a go a play ignorant if found out (after all, not trying to get in as a member which would be more embarrassing) and just retreat to a bar/eatery instead.

Sorry to those I've offended. That was certainly not my intention. I'm not a frequent flyer so I don't quite know the lounge etiquette. I definitely wasn't complaining. More of a slight disappointment that everyone feels when they realise the free lunch they've been offered come with conditions they can't meet.

Conditions can be met ... Stick around, pay attention and soon enough you can be flying for much less than you expected, maybe even having lounge access in your own right.

And in some of those places there is hardly anything past security. CNX is classic example but that does not have as much traffic as some of our Australian airports.

Wouldn't this be the same general principle for all lounge pass users? Anyone who receives a pass as a gift is inherently matching your characterisation of undeserving of lounge entry.

No ticket at all is at the extreme but not that different given the nominal cost of many fares that would allow the pass to be used.

Unless purchased from eBay I think guest passes are only handed out to people who have reached silver tier. So a nice reward.
