Just completed two flights QF35 (MEL-SIN) and QF38 (SIN-MEL) in business.

Both flights had dirty seats. First flight QF35 had crumbs everywhere which a FA then helped clean when we pointed it out and asked for a cleaning cloths.

Second flight QF38 was also dirty, this time I came prepared with anti bacterial wipes. I cleaned down my seat and tray table that had stains. It’s obvious the planes just had a quick vanity vacuum.

Is this normal ?

Yes, it is completely normal.

I have not noticed any real difference between economy and business, in the arena of cleanliness, over many airlines and countries. Especially Qantas. As a general rule flights heading to Australia are cleaner, but not always. Essentially cleaning is done by contractors, who bid the lowest price. Hence lowest time-per-seat.

Airlines run every angle to try to reduce costs, needing to compete with the next airline that does likewise. Every single aspect is the same. I do not have hard figures, but at a (fairly educated) guess the cleaner has about 30 seconds to "clean" each seat. This includes removing rubbish from the seat pockets to vacuuming. In my experience only the very basic and visible surfaces are done. God help you if you drop an item and then search for it with a torch under your seat or in the cracks - this will inevitably scar you with images of popcorn or peanuts that fell there just after the aircraft made its inaugural flight. The only truly clean aircraft that ply the skies are those that have just come out of a refurbishment, or a new build.

The real stats make it all clear - the average airline make about $20 to $30 profit on your international ticket - that would be halved or obliterated if you wanted a truly clean seat. And history has shown that most people will prefer to save any cost increment by a slightly cheaper ticket. And almost all do not look into the crevices.....

Agree - totally normal although it shouldn't be. Anti-bacterial wipes are always in my carry-on .

It is the norm! The Other thing that really annoys me is that the little pillows they give you in QF Business are usually filthy
I have asked for clean ones on numerous occasions usually to be met with a "Qantas scowl" and a replacement not much better.

Really not good enough for what they charge.

geez, is that all the profit they make per person, I presume economy?. Business and First is more profit i presume? But does that take into account that alot of the airlines get government benefits / subsidies?

You've been unlucky then. I have never encountered that.

I have this issue every time I fly business with Qantas on the upper desk in a 747. Dirty ear plugs, tissues, chewing gum - you name it in the side cubby & storage boxes window seats. I always insist it gets cleaned. Likewise food trays on domestic. Dirty nearly every time. I asked for them to be cleaned YUK!

They do actually change the pillow cases on every flight and should be checking the actual pillow too.

Is this because business has a lot more storage / space / areas for personalisation and people just leave all their rubbish there.

Dirty seats, I would call that better than the broken seat I had in first DFW-SYD (booked only because it was cheaper than business). The FA had to provide extreme force every time I wanted the seat at a new angle. That seat 1A is the pits. Business was much more relaxing for the trip over to the USA. Typical QF, not even an apology except for the frequent apologies from the CSM & FAs on the trip.

It's less about people leaving rubbish etc (though this obviously does happen) but more that the Skybed MkII seats in their take off / landing positions are difficult to get in, around and under so by virtue of this it would seem that a cursory vacuum around the spots that are easily reachable are made meaning that crumbs etc that have been spilled throughout a flight and fallen down around the seat don't get cleaned. In economy on the other hand they can easily get under all the seats due to lack of anything there.

Totally normal these days sadly. A few years back I took photos every flight and sent the, to the head of customer service (we had a number of phone calls too). Nothing changed and so now we fly QANTAS only when we need to.

Is that a fact. Inside information? Then they must have total rubbish laundry facilities.

I have had obviously stained and dirty ones on many flights including some that I would rather not think about what the substance might have been.

I now understand why some frequent flyers bring sanitation wipes. I will be doing this on my future flights..

Including celebrities...

Not the seat but dirty cabin on a QF aircraft last year with a thick layer of dust on the panel:

I flew five long haul QF flights in J in a row and all my seat areas were less than clean. Not in awkward areas either. Obvious crumbs and/or rubbish in the top storage area where the water bottle is kept. Also crumbs and stains on the tray table. CSM or FA cleaned when I asked for a cloth to do it, then advised me to email QF Customer Service. Just not good enough! I always take antibacterial wipes on flights now and thorowipe down all surfaces in my area. Unfortunately it has only been Qantas J where this has occurred, not other airlines.

I feel it’s the biggest let down for QF FA crew as it makes them look bad.

I use them to wipe down the remote & other controls or touch screens- who
