Denied B1 Visa for U.S. due to not enough ties to Australia- what to use as proof?

Hi All,
My boyfriend recently applied for a B1 visa to the u.s. as we were intending to travel there for 6 months. He is Irish but an Australian permanent resident. The problem is he doesn't have enough evidence of ties to Australia (or Ireland for that matter). We have been traveling for most of the year & were only based in Australia for 1.5years before that. We don't own any real estate & although a few of his best friends live here, as well as my family (we have been going out for 9 years), the case officer told him that was irrelevant. He also didn't care that his job was willing to have him back at the end of the holiday, as the case officer he said he was only in the job a couple of months so they could change their mind.
We have sufficient funds in our bank account (>$40k) to travel for this period of time, but that also wasn't considered.
We don't know what to do now. Should we reapply for a B1 & if so, how can we prove ties? Or should we chance the wvf & if he gets that then try our luck at the gate?
Thanks for all your help.
