Daru & Western Province, PNG

I may have an opportunity to visit Daru and Western Province. Anyone been there and got any tips. JV

I haven't been to either of those locations but no doubt you will need to stop over in POM. I recommend the airways hotel, they have good security and transfer arrangements for guests. The facilities are the closest you will get to a decent Australian hotel albeit at similar cost if not more these days due to mining etc. Remaining vigilant about personal security is mandatory when in PNG. You should check with the local hotels if there is an ATM in Daru but the less cash you carry the better.

POM is about as good as it gets in PNG, except for maybe Madang or the islands. Everywhere else is like the wild west. If you want to sight see, pick a reputable company who has good reviews - they will know the local area and have sufficient security. Other than by air, i would avoid travelling alone.

The Airways is very nice but comes at a cost - $400+ per night. The Gateway next door or the Holiday Inn are a bit cheaper and have clean but basic rooms. All have free airport shuttles - just let them know what flight you are on.

Bring sun protection to the Western Province - it can get very hot during the days. Also it is good to cover up at night (long sleeves) and use insect repellant to protect you from malaria. Be careful 10-14 days after you have left to observe for symptoms of malaria (headache, fever, joint pain) and notify your doctor that you have travelled to PNG if being checked out. I personally don't take anti-malarials due to the side-effects but your choice depending on how long you will be staying and in what areas.
