I have the choice of CX543 (B777-300) or JL29 (B777-200/300) for the 4H45m flight HND-HKG; similar timings.

Which should I choose? I'll have to re-check bags for an onward CX flight to BOM if I go JL, but I can do that early at Kowloon station when I take the HKX into the city (its abt a 6hr transit, both cases), so not a big factor.

When I first read your headline, I thought it was NRT (instead of HND). But your flight numbers indicate that it is HND-HKG routes.

If it was NRT, I would have chosen JL hands down due to the fact that CX run regional planes to/from NRT.

But given that it is HND, you should get a plane on CX (only for that flight btw where it has F) which has LH J config.

Still, personally, I would choose JL just to mix it up a bit - given its an airline I fly less, the seat is comparable (you get the new skysuite 2 which is also reverse herringbone) and catering is better.

Arrrg! I did mean HND-HKG in the title (I'll ask a mod to change).

I'm flying JL44 LHR-HND in J beforehand and currently booked on JL29 HND-HKG, as I have a downer on CX business at the moment, but the TA suggested the CX alternative, considering the interlining of bags issue for HKG transit.

I think JL29 will have Skysuite III, but for a 5 hr daytime flight its not a biggie.

Still leaning towards taking JL, as I haven't flown them much before and as I said, I think CX J is off a bit and the baggage issue can be managed.

But any other comments welcome.

Yup i mean that latest skysuite w/ the reverse herringbone.

If it was a night flight I would choose CX (JL had a weird rigid overnight service system on a short overnight flight when I flew them before) when I but since its day, and given your inclination toward JL, seems like JL is the logical choice!

My most recent CX J trip from HKG-HND (June) saw me end up in a regional configuration with limited recline. Whereas the NRT-HKG trip the week prior had a new configuration plane with lay flat seats.

Definitely JL for me. Better service and food, albeit in my limited experience.

There are a few CX departues out of HND - the only one that is gu

Just to clarify - the ONLY CX plane HND-HKG that will guarantee the LH J config is CX549 (departing 16:10). This is the flight that has F on it, and seems to be the only regional F on CX that is protected.

Re-reading OP is flying CX543, you are not guaranteed a LH J seat on that. So will be playing equipment lottery. And for that reason alone, JL wins.

I’ve just completed a 280K OW trip which included two sectors each with JL and CX.

The food and service are better on JL IMHO, however, on NRT-SIN with JL we had the 777-200ER with Skysuite III and it was very old and due for a refurb.

Most notable was the seat had very limited adjustment. It could do upright to fully flat and anything in between. However, adjustments like raising or extending the legrest were not possible. On the plus side the tray table was larger than on CX and could swivel to allow you to leave your seat during the meal if required.

For a 6hr day flight, I’d take JL for the soft product.
