It is a bit of a first world problem - so much choice I cannot make a decision!

I have 7 days after a work conference in Switzerland for a break and as majority here are well travelled, I would love to hear some ideas based on your trips.

The key facts:
- My starting point will be Geneva (or Zurich if needs be)
- 7 days
- Last week of November
- I'm not a skier!
- Paris can be excluded as spent a week there
- Will be travelling alone
- Budget not of concern

I was pretty set on heading north to see the Northern Lights. But now I've been side tracked with thinking Helsinki and St Petersburg.

So where would you go and why?

Always St Petersburg! And Moscow! But not in the last week of November :( Average temp abt 0; avg 1 hour of sunshine a day. I think it would spoil a trip to one of the greatest cities on earth.

Island hopping off the Dalmatian coast? Portugal - grilled sardines over coals at Peniche? Go crazy at the Jamaa el Fna at Marrakesh?

My suggestions would vary according to how active you want to be. Do you want to be out & about hiking or focus on being in cities & eating?

Good point!

Not looking for something outdoors active. I love exploring cities and definitely the food scene, a bit of art, not shopping.

Probably a nice mix between exploring and chilling out.

Italy is close. What about Venice and Florence? You've got food covered, some iconic sights and art too.

Verona was lovely - can recommend an amazing airbnb and wonderful gin bar - easy walking around and some great restaurants (could also head to Padua and Vicenza or as suggested Florence or Venice - Lucca is lovely too - again good restaurants and easy walking

I have done Berlin for a weekend at the end of November, it was cold but bearable.

I would think Italy; Rome, Venice or Naples or a combination of all 3, it would be a bit warmer than central Europe.

Northern lights may be an option but it will be cold.

I like the cold!

Will rule out Italy as I am going to head to Venice for the weekend in the middle of my conference.

I think Spain & Portugal may be the picks just based on weather & relatively easy to get to. We have had great times in Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bosnia etc but a quick check seems to indicate Nov is not an ideal time to be there. The west coast of Slovenia might be the best of those I mentioned.
I guess with anywhere in Europe in Nov you are faced with pretty short days so some daily plans would change because of that.
I will be interested in other suggestions you get & to see which way you jump

Having been in Paris in Nov and Southern France and Spain in Oct, the difference in climate is quite dramatic.

If it were I, I'ld be heading south. If Italy is out consider Seville, Madrid, Montpellier, Marseilles, etc. Toulouse is at a higher altitude so would be starting to get cool. Also consider that Madrid is the highest capital in Europe so it may be starting to cool down (but I can't say as I haven't been there later than mid-Oct, which was fine).

I note you like the cold but some places in Europe are miserable in autumn/winter as it's not only cold, but also damp, drizzly and the days in N Europe are very short.

My 2 cents worth...

I am over there at the same time I am doing 2 weeks driving around Spain and Portugal, avg temps are 15-24 degrees, will be the warmest parts of Europe at that time i believe. also going to Morocco for 10 dates (25 degrees) the london and geneva to see friends and family.
Not sure what you have in mind, but I would also consider some of the Spanish islands such as Ibiza etc, the party clubs close mid-late september, and u are left with nice hotels which are normally $250-800 a night for $100-150. the old town is beautiful, and some great beaches and food around.

Not sure why Mods have moved this to Destination Guides as it's not about a particular destination!
