I have a flight coming up on Avianca and being in Star Alliance, I can use either my Air NZ Airpoints account or KrisFlyer (have a United FF account hanging around too).

What is the best earning option? It's only a Y flight of around 1,200kms.

I am creeping myself towards Silver in Airpoints - otherwise if it goes into KrisFlyer, I'd transfer it out to Velocity (my main FF program).

Interested in thoughts.

Radical thought but why not avianca!

Because the points will end up stranded there as it is not an airline I see myself flying with again in the near future and I'd rather accrue them to an account I have frequent activity in where they can work for me.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Milboo, have a look at the Lifemiles threads. (That is Avianca's FF program) It is very good. I have Star Alliance Gold status through them for the next two years at very little cost. And with Lifemiles you can redeem tickets at world-best rates almost anywhere across the globe. (with the usual restrictions that points redemptions suffer in any program)

Being a member of a particular airlines' frequent flyer program has nothing to do with having to fly with them. I have yet to set foot onboard an Avianca aircraft.

Using Avianca Life Miles as an example, I signed up 2 years ago just prior to a 100% bonus offer for miles which I was then eligible for. Note that you must already be an enrolled member of AV LM before being able to take advantage of any bonus miles purchase, so sign up pronto.

I had a hankering to visit Guam courtesy of another ff progam (US DM) and found out that GUM/BOS (AV LM) was considered a domestic award which was only 10,000 miles, so will the bonus all I had to do was purchase 5,000 miles for the princely sum of USD150.00 - not too bad as the AUD was worth more then.

There was about USD250.00 in taxes on top of the initial purchase of the miles when I made the booking GUM UA x/NRT UA x/ORD UA BOS all in J class - actually not entirely true as ORD/BOS was in F.

Just make sure that the fare bucket your AV flight is booked in is an earning one in whatever ff program you end up crediting to.

You can credit any star alliance flight to Avianca and they have a very good buy points program. Not sure why Im trying to convince you though, would rather keep those who know about Avianca down.

Seems to me that a 1200km (750 mile ) flight is hardly worth worrying too much about. I'd suggest SQ, unless getting Silver on NZ is important to you.

Sure you can join Avianca, but ultimately people take advantage of that by buying miles. These sort of miles earning may save you $15 aud in a buying miles purchase. Or less if in cheap fare class.

I love this story!! It makes my obsessions seem far more normal !!

Don't bother with Air New Zealand or Airpoints... If it's that or KrisFlyer, there's really no question. SQ.

Thanks for views.

I use Airpoints as I tend to end up with about 6 Air NZ domestic flights a year and can't really put them anywhere but there.
