We are going overseas next year and are allowed up to 30kgs baggage for our international flight. However are permitted just 23kgs for our connecting domestic flight.

I have searched the Virgin website to no avail to ascertain how much it will cost to pre-purchase the additional kgs. Can anyone assist .... I dont want to purchase an additional bag .... simply another 5-6 kgs.

Are the flights on the same or different tickets as this could change the answer here?

VA = Piece based system, so to answer the OP - extra baggage is purchased per piece, not by weight.

Except if travelling on codeshare with Singair which is total baggage weight
Additionally reward fares on codeshares operated by Etihad are also baggage total weight not piece.

However it's separate carriers so maybe not VA codeshare??

Reading between the lines I think Beasley is flying a VA domestic (1x23kg) to connect to a ????Singair flight (total 30kg)
In which case the 30kg limit applies to both sectors - if VA happy to interline (check through luggage to Singair on a different Ticket (PNR)

Beasley can you clarify please. It depends on who the international carrier is. You should get total 30kg if the international carrier is a partner of VA and VA happy to interline the luggage to different PNR.

If not a VA partner or VA does not interline to international leg then pay for overweight component of 30kg bag at the airport (hefty "fine" ) or pay for 2nd bag for VA domestic leg

When you online checkin for VA domestic you can prepay for extra luggage. So Mannej is correct here.

I probably didnt explain myself properly. We have booked Cathay Pacific from Melbourne to Hong Kong using QFF points. But we will be buying a fare between Launceston and Melbourne the previous day and would prefer to fly Virgin instead of Jetstar.

As we expect to have more than the allowable 23kg in each suitcase (we are allowed 30kg on our international flight) I am wanting to purchase a few extra kgs ...... but simply cannot find any option on their website how this can be done. They only mention additional bags. I guess I will have to call them ... something which I try and avoid because airline calls take forever.

Ok clearer now.

So you will have to recheckin at Melbourne.

On the virgin website when you buy the ticket you will be able to buy extra piece not extra kilos.
Im pretty sure in Cx you are allowed 30 kg (split across max 2 pieces).
So just purchase an extra piece when you buy the virgin flight

But will you be travelling with 30 kg over or just 30 kg back?. Just get 2 pieces of luggage where one will fit inside the other. Go with one bag, Do your shopping there, come back with 2 pieces total weight to 30kg

You aren't able to purchase just a few KG's, as it is a piece based allowance.
