Contrails - may be a negative side

Ahhh, but those nice white chem...err...contrails, are reflecting the insolation back out into space so stopping the warming! ;) Problem solved: get out and fly more.

Or someone will work out that it's just cheaper to build a little space-based mirror louvre system and site it at the correct point between the earth and the sun to deflect away 1% of the suns energy.* No more global warming or European heatwaves! Cause we're really smart us humans and there'd never be any unintended consequences of our actions... now excuse me whilst I dispatch this cane toad with a six iron, umm, I mean humanely freeze it in a plastic bag.

* Arthur C Clarke had this stuff worked out 20 or so years ago.

Experts......X is an unknown quantity and sperts, are drips under pressure
I've always known it as... An "ex" is a has-been. A "spurt" is a drip under pressure. So an "expert" is a has-been drip under pressure.

But back to the article, at least I'll be hitting LTG soon so I can stop global warming ;)

I've heard of Eric's version, but not yours before Sam...

Nah, we got taught the 'icehouse effect' in school 35 years ago, by a hotshot science teacher straight off the plane from the USA.

Then it was all about smog, reflecting solar radiation back into space, cooling the planet.

Cooling, warming ... meh - its been happening for thousands of millions of years.

^ That’s difficult to believe, we were taught about the greenhouse effect & rising temperatures due to gases such as CO2 and methane in school 35 years ago ... it was nothing new then, and the most commonly held theories according to mainstream science (ie. with more & more data gathered & understood) hasn’t changed in at least 50 years.

Hard to believe that different things are taught in schools? Horrors!

Believe it or not! I ain't gunna try to prove it here. ;)

Sorry, the inference when someone says something like that is usually that “the science” can’t make up it’s mind, and I thought that was what you were saying. But that’s not true, not in the case of climate-change science at least.
Of course, there are always people with really old info or who read a thing once, and I guess teachers are among ‘em.

50 years ago at Sydney University we were being taught the "cooling" theory.

Yeah that tallies, seems to have been the late 70’s that they started to get the computing power to start drawing all the data together & get a better global view of what was really going on.

So you are saying the science is proven?

Geologists have been collating the data and the science in a systematic way for about 120 years. Computers not needed - just field observations.

Temperatures been going up and down almost 'forever' - since the earth cooled - and I mean really cooled  - enough for continents to solidify and drift. Ice ages come and go, warming, cooling by many 10s of degrees, sea levels rising and falling by 50 metres. On it goes, Eon after eon.

Ho hum. Nothing new under the sun.

Mind, it wouldn't surprise me if humans were having some effect on the climate. But since we are dealing with a unique circumstance, with nothing to compare it to, the jury will have to be out how to apportion blame. But be assured, nature 'done it' every time up to now. ;)

So you are saying the science is proven?
Nope, because science pretty much never is ‘proven’; what we know of physics only approximately describes a plane’s flight, for example.
And I’m also not going to try & change someone’s belief any more than I’m going to try & change anyone’s religion. I’m just the archeologist saying “hey the dig we must did actually proves that the events described in Religious Text C are based on something that really happened!”. :)

Well if you read it correctly, they aren’t saying that the heat is reflected back into space, but rather that it exacerbates the heat trapping effect.

And sure, the Earth has gone through warming and cooling in the past, but on much longer time scales than we are seeing at present.

Yes, but you were no doubt doing medicine and we scientists only tell med undergraduates the little that they are capable of absorbing

How do you know? ;) Like I said up-thread, we only have one direct observation of a varying climate, over the tiniest fraction of time imaginable, but evidence like varved sediments say things could happen pretty quick in the past. Humans think they are so important, everything needs to revolve around and involve them. The earth is quite capable of some pretty snazzy moves all on its own (hmmm ... maybe with occasional help for meteorites  )

we scientists

... have differing expertise and views but I would never attempt to shut anyone up with the put-down "the science is settled", like that very well known "climate billionaire" Mr Gore. or the paaleontologist, and Panasonic promoter, Dr Flannery.

my subjects were Physics,Chemistry,Maths and Zoology

Wot, no geology? No wonder you became a doctor. Those were my subjects too, plus the rocks of course. The geos had the best parties. The Earth's birthday party, on the 22 October every year, was the biggest gig, anywhere in town. 6,023 years and going strong.

"The earth is a geologist's paradise"

lol
But the scientists do know youre doing medicine, and only tel you what you can absorb.
Be reassured to know that you would've at least got more science than the design students.
