Hi guys,

I couldn't find the answer in the forum as it's quite specific so I hope someone can help;

I have been a velocity member retaining either gold or platinum since 2011 but a friend just asked me a question I really wasn't sure about. She has VA gold and has already retained it for this year. Since this, she has done a few more flights allowing her status balance to reach just over 1000 points. The trick is her account specifies that she has earned just over 700 of these sc within the last 12 months.
She then asked me if this means she will still be entitled to upgrade to platinum or not. She referred to the velocity website where it says "once your status balance hits 1000 you will qualify for platinum" whereas in the gold section of her account, it said how many status credits she needed to reach within a 12 month period. Therefore she is interpreting this as she will hit platinum since her status credit balance has hit over 1000.
Yet I'm wondering if the general rule of thumb is that you needed to earn a full 1000sc during the 12 month period.

Does this make sense? In basic terms, do you need to earn a total 1000 sc in 12 months or will you hit platinum so long as at some point in the 12 months your balance reaches 1000?
I've honestly never thought about this as I always earn more than required to at least retain gold.

Great question, I understand exact what you are talking about. My gold renewal isn't until May next year but my profile says I need 1,000 credits by December of this year to reach platinum.

I too have been wondering what happens if I hit 1,000 after December instead of before? Surely it is a 1,000 requirement in a twelve month period

Pretty sure it's the second. If you hit 1000 in any rolling 12 month period, you should become platinum assuming that you have flown the 8 eligible sectors.

there is a link on your account for the upgrade to Platinum which will show all dates and points / loss that will be required for a given date. Should be quite clear in identifying what is required. You balance will hit 1000 then you're Plat. otherwise points will have expired.

You need to hit 1,000 SC during a 12 month period, but this does not need to be the same 12 months as the renew for gold period.

.If she is Gold, there should be two sections in her account. A Maintain Gold section and a Upgrade to Platinum section. It is the status credit balance in the Upgrade to Platinum section that matters. This reflects the total in the last 12 months.

The short answer is that it is impossible for your balance to reach 1000 SC unless you have earned 1000 SC in 12 months. After 12 months the SC drop off your account.

So when your account hits 1000 you become Platinum.

CPMaverick you're correct and this was the obvious answer to me, however (although I wasn't able to see her account) she kept saying while her sc's were just shy of platinum her account said she had only earned 775 in the last 12 months. That is what confused us.

Mate, log in to www.velocityfrequentflyer.com and it will tell you in the clearest possible terms.

"Status credits earned since X"
"Additional status credits required to maintain gold by X"
"Additional status credits required to upgrade to platinum by X"

When the third number reaches 0 you're platinum! And you should be able to watch it reduce with each flight.
