So I got a phone call from QFF today, saying that for 72k points I could get a confirmed points upgrade MEL-LAX Jupgarde despite my discounted Y ticket...

Basically the points are the same amount as nornal full Y points upgrades, but confirmed right now and on discount Y ticket - any thoughts on why QF might be doing this?

I'm guessing they are either trying to reduce their overall points exposure (strange they chose me as I ony have 75k points) or are QF tryong to get $e to voluntarily upgrade due to heavy booking?

Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated...

For reference I'm QP bronze and am flying on Thursday - I grabbed their number but didn't accept this offer as I'd rather save the points and travel for free in the coming year or so...

At a guess .. QF have oversold the Y cabin and they're trying to avoid op-ups.

This is happening a bit.

Indeed they do seem to match the offer to the number of points.

A relative who has not many points received a call before his flight offering to upgrade him to Premium Economy (he would not have had enough points for business).

Again, his ticket was not upgradeable. He took the offer.

I personally believe in using points to upgrade out of economy class.

Pity you didn't take the offer... IMHO taking these offers is an excellent use of points, as you have only paid for a discount Y ticket (basically taxes, with a little bit of gravy for QF) and yet you sit in Y+ \ J or F...

Better still, right now some Y+ pax are being placed in the J section, which means that for very few points + very few $$$ your getting a skybed seat, which (unless your a certain member on this board) doesn't suck at all for AUS - US flights...

As others have said, they are looking for ways to sell the seats cheap so they don't have to give free op-ups on the day...

That said, if you don't get as many points regularly, an almost-free flight is still an almost free flight, so I can understand not taking the upgrade if you'd prefer to get the other benefit.

That's exactly my thinking - I have about a 30-45k point spend on credit cards per year crediting to QFF, so with my current 75k plus USA trip this week (~20k points) and a shortish period of CC spend, I should have enough points to get me to Europe for free (or low cost by paying the taxes) reasonably soon...

Whilst business is tempting, I have thought all along that this trip would be economy and I have been allocated 71B (I think...) which is one of the seats at the back where they are 2-3-2

I know the chances aren't great, but surely I can live in hope that nobody takes up the points offer, and I get an Op-Up instead :D

Thanks for your thoughts people - much appreciated

Consumer Affairs Vic said I can sue in VCAT if they bumped me off the plane due to oversold seats. I'd demand a seat in business class for free, but I've got a lawyer in LA. :D

Actually I think you'll find that most if not all of the flights which scrapped F and were instead using J seats for Y+ have now returned to selling F which means Y+ pax are no longer being seated in J.

Yep, the flight I'm on tomorrow seems to be like that.

FWIW I was called on Monday, also for a flight on Thursday to upgrade to either PE or J. As I've only ever had J (NRT-PER) in Dreamtime seats, I went for J to get an upper deck seat in a Skybed. You only live once. I had the points, so may as well use them.

I received such a call today regarding my MEL-AKL flight this later week. I had suspected it was heading to oversell in WHY (most of the MEL-AKL flights that days seem heavily sold including DJ and NZ). I had to decide between spending 16K points on a Millenium seat or taking my chances with an op-up.

By not taking the offer, if I do not get an op-up, I am still allocated 4C.

A sage decision I think.

Hmmm. Let's see 72,000 QFF points to sit in business class for ~13 hours across the lake or 142,500 QFF points for a Oneworld award.

When one does not earn QFF points that quickly then a Oneworld award is extemely attractive even in economy....

Not having ever done a RTW, I like to use my points soley now on J upgrades or J awards. I evn had to pay 132,500 points for a BNE-HKG return in J on CX ... JohnK, you probably think I am crazy now  :D

I find the idea of travelling ATW in economy extremely unattractive. 96k for a business one way ( where an upgrade would be 72k) would be much more appealing

and of course if using FF miles of a higher value currency, 72.5K could redeem a one-way First Class award MEL-LAX ;).

Oh, absolutely. Using higher value EK miles, getting an upgrade to BKK next week was v good value and ( unlike certain airlines which use a kangaroo as a logo ) was confirmable at time of booking earlier this week.

72.5k AA candy does do well for a flight to USA in F compared to the 72k needed just to upgrade to business :)

Crazy? Not at all. It is all about personal preference. Whatever makes you happy.

I collect enough QFF points for a RTW in economy every 2-3 years and using QFF points to upgrade 1-2 sectors here or there would be wasting that opportunity.

Got the same call Friday afternoon for my Monday flight MEL-LAX. Took the same approach I had during that special upgrade offer a few months ago. 72000 for an upgrade or 96000 for a one way award thus only valuing my current economy ticket at 24000 in 80K.

I did enquire on a cash upgrade but they said not from Australia. I have their direct number if anyone wants it but from what I was told there is a team of 3-4 of them that are currently doing this and are given a pre-defined list from their analysts as to who to offer them to.

They stressed a few times on the phone that there were only 6 available. Seat counter at the time was showing at least 9 in J and D and C but I0.

Honestly a little cheaper I would have done it.

What do you guys think 80k or 72000 points.
