Confirmed Pre-departure Upgrades on CX

Thought this might be of use to anyone considering using Asia Miles/MPC to upgrade seat class and what to expect.

One of the best benefits from CX is the ability to confirm an upgrade when there is available award inventory and you hold a ticket in an eligible booking class (unfortunately only one class at this time: Y-PE, PE-J or J-F)

My better half as one of my pre-registered Redemption Group can receive upgrades from my miles. Holding a confirmed ticket in V class from SYD-HKG, 3 days out I noticed that award inventory had opened up in PE.

An upgrade from economy to premium economy costs 12,500 pts one-way but must be done from M class or higher (YBHKM) to be eligible - not a problem as CX no longer charges rebooking fees for V class tickets on SYD-HKG so only the fare difference was payable (in this case $106AUD).

I called the MPC hotline and the agent completed the following steps for me:


  1. Process rebooking to M class with e-service centre on my behalf (I could have done this myself online but wanted them to confirm the award availability first)
  2. Process fare difference by credit card
  3. Process Asia Miles Upgrade and seat selection
  4. Pass to ticketing desk to reissue e-ticket
