I'm currently trying to build an itinerary for trip to Japan with a few friends. Unfortunately we live in different cities so we can't meet to discuss things. I was wondering if there was something out there where we could build an travel plan together, using facebook. So it puts up notifications when the itinerary is updated.

At the moment I looked at touristeye.com (check it out first to get an idea), however it's glitched and I can't add anyone onto it. Tripit is useless in this application. Any suggestions?

May not do notifications but Google Doc might serve as a central file to allow multiple users to update?

Sign up to TripIt: TripIt - Travel Itinerary - Trip Planner

You can simply send them itineraries for each travelling party and they'll automatically figure out who's where at what times. I use it to integrate with my Outlook calendars and my mobile phone device too.

The OP has already found TripIt to be useless for collaborative trip planning with multiple parties!

I used this method initially but it's just too hard to get people to review it without it having facebook integration.

I think you completely missed my point, have a look at Touristeye.com and/or reread my initial post.

I honestly didn't read the TripIt part of the sentence, I don't know why, but I Apologise.

Which elements of Touristeye are you trying to achieve? Is it the tourist sites or just building up travel plans?

I'd like to be able to build up travel plans. The tourist site stuff is just a bonus but I could add that myself just by typing. The main feature I want is to be able to share and update through facebook.

I know you have discounted TripIt but couldn't you set up a generic user account that everyone has the password for. Then integrate TripIt calendars into say Google Calendar - no notifications as such but easy to regularly check?

That was the reasoning behind me jumping the gun with TripIt. I think you'd have to pay to get the Business Travel Itinerary options (30day free trial though), here's the blurb: Business Travel Itinerary - Flight, Hotel, Route, Expenses & More - TripIt

Create itineraries for your travelers in an instant
No more cutting and pasting. Just forward flight, hotel, and rental car confirmation emails to [email protected] with the traveler's email in the subject line. TripIt creates personal itineraries that will make you look like the most organized person on the planet.

Organize
Organize all your travelers, all in one spot. When is Fred back? How much will we spend on travel in the next 30 days? Can you send the hotel reservation before I board? No problem. The TripIt for Business dashboard puts you in total control so you can respond before, during, and after take-off.

On the Go
Keep your travelers in the know, on the go, Every traveler has instant access to their itineraries - on their mobile phone, email, and the web. Travelers get a shared company calendar to know where coworkers are, and when they're coming back. With an online pegboard, see who's in and out of the office.

I've not used the business or Pro editions, but the write-up seems to suggest that it can do what the OP wants. I'm not sure about notifications upon changes, but each itinerary is alwasy kept up to date with the latest information.

Look at online collaboration software, not necessarily travel specific....heaps here

Best Online Collaboration Tools 2012 - Robin Good... - MindMeister Mind Map

I've never had a problem organising it via Tripit and sharing trips but horses for courses I guess.

Facebook sucks for collaboration....actually sucks full-stop. :p

Look at Basecamp, Freedcamp, etc in the project management section in the above link....the problem with using collab software is getting people to actually use it....group emails probably more effective then when a consensus is reached enter it into a shared travel management app.

Just my .02c

No problem, I'm surprised there aren't more apps like this that can sync with Facebook and Android. I thought Tripit would have ventured down this route ages ago.

I think the key factor is the ability to incorporate facebook so it provides updates and then to be able to sync that with Android. TouristEye is perfect but it doesn't actually work (website glitch, no friends getting invited).

Ok one last time on Tripit....Tripit is good if you're organizing things for yourself and letting your mates know. But I don't see a function where I can add in 6 mates on facebook and then we can work together online to develop an itinerary. I don't see a button where I type in Tokyo, and it pops up with places I should visit and gives me the option to add it to the itinerary with a map overlay. I don't see a section where multiple around the world can work together to develop an itinerary of everything they wanna do while travelling together.

It's not about using facebook, it's about using an app within facebook e.g. million other facebook apps.

People use facebook. That's a win right there.:D

Basecamp and Freedcamp are more project management orientated. I'm looking for more of a dedicated travel planning app like dopplr/touristeye.

Group emails are fine, but there's a reason the Gantt Chart exists.
We need to be able to visually organize our plan. Having 600 emails, with 50% of them in arguments doesn't get anyone, anywhere. However a shared travel planning app that can sync with facebook and android will solve the issues.

There is this:
Facebook for TripIt

Now you can share your travels with your friends on Facebook.

With Facebook for TripIt, your friends can see when you're planning, departing and returning from your trips. It's the easiest way to get travel advice from your social network—where to eat, what to see, what to do, all that stuff-or to help you meet-up with friends in the same city as you. Your TripIt trips are automatically posted to your Facebook News Feed so it’s easy to get comments right when you need them the most.

If its anything like the LinkedIn app that I also use, anyone on LinkedIn can see summarised information about the travel, where and when, but not specifics such as flights or hotel name. Anyone else thats also on both LinkedIn *and* using the TripIt app for LinkedIn can see overall stats on each others travel.

Can I ask if you read this paragraph about tripit?

Sounds like theres a market for such a facebook app then...
But I get the hint and I'll just make do with what is available. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll post in here If I find anything. Tons of people uses Facebook to organize events, I'm surprised there isn't the some demand for more detailed travel planners.
