Frequent Flyer Points vs. Retail Price Analysis for SYD - LON / NYC

Here we are trying to show a visual representation of the differences in points needed between different airlines vs. Retail prices - flying Business class between SYD to London, and SYD to New York. We also have adjusted the 'cents per point return' for the fees & taxes payable when redeeming points.

While you guys are probably pretty well clued up, but hopefully this is useful for the general public.

I've also got the raw data about the fees and taxes payable used in the calc at: Comparison of Frequent Flyer Points vs. Retail price - Business class
We are thinking of creating more infographics with different data, let me know what other topics would be cool.

Cheers
Steve

somewhat dated Qantas logo.

Would be useful to show what 'taxes' or fuel fines you are deducting

Using Firefox I also seem to get the same info in text format repeated

Mentions also V Australia going to NYC in the table....? How old is this article :?

Re: Comparison of Points vs. Retail price for flying Business class SYD - LHR, SYD -

Well, actually V Australia to LAX and Delta to NYC, with their Virgin Australia partnership.

As a comparative newbie to the points and CC manoeuvres I found it easy to understand and liked the clear graphics.

Look forward to reading meaningful feedback from the experts . JoyV

I've included the data on the fees & taxes on this link.
Comparison of Frequent Flyer Points vs. Retail price - Business class
The text in the link states "taxes payable on point’s redemption". It does not state "taxes & airline imposed fees" There is a vast difference for QF and some others. Carrier imposed fees(~profit) are NOT taxes
If you are going to publish something (for your own commercial gain?) best to get it correct. A far better table would include cash outlay by the punter for real taxes and carrier fuel surcharges and the like. Why is the “points transfer to carriers" not in alphabetic order (airlines & bank)? Advertising?

Title it what you prefer, but it does mean all 'taxes, fees, fuel surcharges airport fees, security taxes' etc.
Basically this is the amount payable when redeeming points to fly on that route on that airline, in AUD.

If you're pitching (presumably your website, for commercial gain, on AFF, which is I may add, against the terms and conditions of the forum) to frequent flyers, you're best off getting things right. This includes not referencing 'V Australia' which has not existed since 7 December, 2011 (it's now all Virgin Australia).

The fares are also seemingly sale fares, as the listed dates on that site are now showing $11,249.80, almost double what you're listing.

Sales come and go, so you really need to either list full fares, or mention the year (you just have 1-15 June).

Re: Comparison of Points vs. Retail price for flying Business class SYD - LHR, SYD -

Appreciate your feedbacks.

And the update on on V Australia as I didn't notice the rebranding.
(I normally fly United, Qantas or via Seoul on Asiana to get to USA - but I heard Virgin is decent too.)

The sample flight prices are for depart 1 June, return 15 June 2014.
If I was to list the full fares, then you might instead find sale fares and say I was cherry-picking the numbers for greater impact.

Overall the purpose of putting together this infographic is to visually share the information on the relative difference of points vs. retail across various airlines.

Re: Comparison of Points vs. Retail price for flying Business class SYD - LHR, SYD -

I think the infographic is a really good idea, but I also second other peoples posts about making very clear distinctions between real taxes and other fuel fines and fees. I know they all have to be paid but its important to make the distinction for the purposes of refunds. Speaking of refunds, an infographic showing the rebooking fees and refund policies of the different carriers and fare types.

Another thing that I would add would be which alliance each airline is associated with, and possibly a way of showing (with the examples you have used) whther the "points plus pay" options/scenarios presented actually earn status credits or not? Maybe just for the people whom may want to burn up a lot of points to convert to status credits (say to kick them over the line from Silver to Gold or Gold to Plat etc).

Another interesting exapmple would be just to do a simple MEL-PER or SYD-PER transcon example for QF VA and JQ and say one long north-south domestic example such as MEL-CNS (allowing 1 stop in SYD or BNE). Don't forget to show the cost of "burning" QFF points to fly Jetstar. Just a suggestion, as it may be more meaningful to some people than the SYD-LHR and SYD-LAX examples that you have done.

I thought it quite useful. There are a number of variables that are difficult to factor in for my own case, but nevertheless I quite like the visual presentation.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Re: Comparison of Points vs. Retail price for flying Business class SYD - LHR, SYD -

thanks for the feedback.
I'll take this for the adjustments so not to confuse anyone.
The general public outside the forum probably wouldn't be too detailed about what exact type of fees are charges, just that they need to pay money with their points to fly. And this was a common shock and compliant.

I'll look into your other suggestions, though some are pretty complex.
especially the points+pay options linked to status credits - man, that is why some people get no sleep (because they are working it all out).
