Now I do recall VA reaching out for help occasionally (seat testing which was cancelled seems to spring to mind) but have I just missed this initiative or is it new?

I've been emailed an invite to it. They also emailed a separate Valentine's email where they tell me I'm in the top 1% award redeemers. Not sure how, I've only ever redeemed one flight for 3 people that I can remember, but I did transfer all my VA points to SQ, so I assume that classes as a redemption! Maybe the two are connected, maybe not.

I got that email too. I assumed it went to everyone because my work flying has dropped off significantly - I'll struggle to keep gold this year (but was also in the top 1% in the V-day email!)

Received one, but not the other, as a data point.

It appears to be new as all the terms and even the title refer to January this year... seems they're a bit behind their planned launch.

I got that invite too.
On Valentines email I was only top 5% with 368,150.

Received the community invite as well. Top 1% of earners but need to do better when it comes to redeeming....

I'll make a correction to my OP. I forgot about my SYD-AUH-MLE-SIN-BNE which were also redemptions for 3 pax. Still, it seems to suggest there are a lot of people not redeeming many points if I am actually in the top 1%.

I did also recieve this and not as high status or frequent flyer as others here.

Besides being a data gathering / emaill harvesting exercise or even just ticking someones box on a KPI (cynical I know  ) - if it looks like VA and Velocity are actually interested in what their customers think and are prepared to do something about it, then perhaps we should be ranking and discussing some realistic but tangible improvements that they could do - and also tell them about the things that we do like and don't want 'enhanced'.....

I've been away from the forum for a while but would the following still be a good start as to what the general consensus is about VAi VAd and the actual VFF program itself? List is in no particular order and we should be open to discussion about what needs to be a high priority. Some of these may be "old news" or unrealistic and wishful thinking given the extreme pressure on Virgin Australia's bottom line but if they are going to stay in business against their main domestic competitor then they are going to have to offer a compelling case to fly with them either in price or in product quality.

The fact that both Qantas and Virgin don't seem to support having an active social media rep here on AFF, or other forums, would seem to indicate that they are extremely uninterested in what their customers, or frequent customers think about their products so we should probably temper our enthusiasm as to how real or how committed we should be to this sort of market research.

Anyway - here is my summation of what I have seen in the threads lately - but as I said - others may have new/better things to suggest.

Brickbats
1. Overall patchwork of partner airlines and earn/burn class and lounge inconsistency within these partnerships with DL NZ EY HA and SQ
2. Pricing of Y and J fares and where VA actually sit in the market
3. Sheer economy of scale and not quite the domestic frequency and reach that Qantas ha - not a cheap fix.
4. The roll out of Economy X product - price vs what you actually get - and its affect on seating availibility
5. No proper food or inconsistent food on board aircraft except for Perth services
6. Web site and App user experience problems - I assume the VA web site is still fairly shambolic/unreliable?
7. Loss of A330 services on longer coast to coast flights by deploying these aricraft to HGK (apparently this is not such a profit bonanza as expected) - last minute substitutions from A330 to B737 a big downgrade for J class pax especially - I think both QF and VA are guilty of this - they love to advertise and sell A330 transcon at the point of sale but seem to have a habit of delivering the B737 product.
8. Poor non-existant redemption opportunites - especially between Australian and LAX - anywhere else?
9. Call centre wait times and performance - I don't use them a lot but others may have good or bad things to suggest
10. Ground/airport response to IIROPS (weather of planes going unservicable) - is the ground response satisfactory?

Compliments

1. Are they still doing priority boarding properly? Or at least more consistently than their competitor?
2. Family pooling in Velocity, is this still a positive? I think most of us here would agree that this is a point of differentiation.
3. Protecting J class cabins and toilets from pax in Y class - is this still enforced and is it important?
3. B777 fleet still 9 abreast in Y
4. A330 J class cabin - not seen domestically much anymore but
5. Other high status perk or lack therof - what tangible benefits to VA Plats and Gold get and how useful are they?
6. Velocity tie-up with Flybuys seems to be fairly popular?

I just got the email and will hop on board. I wonder if the joining hurdle was high points earner (remember the email from a couple of months ago) and/or high redeemer (email sent very recently)?

Yes I just joined. Not much on site at all.
I'm no one special at Virgin. Just Platinum with about 400,000 points.
Was in a Qantas one of these years ago, chat room and surveys. At least they used to give you FF's for contributions. Then one day threw me out. No chance to say goodbye or put on bad stuff on the board I guess!

I'm a member of a Coles one too. Since November. Prizes only. Had nothing. Not staying there much longer. They arn't getting my pearls of wisdom for nothing.
Seems this Virgin one might be the same.

Only one that is any good is e-rewards. Surveys for points to convert to Velocity. I can do the surveys really quick.

The 5 other accounts I manage (all red) have not received it).

Sorry for the thread jack, actually, its not that hard to retain VFF status, ie, take it like this, house pool families Coles shopping into one FB account and there into one VFF account, fly some, and SG can be done.
500 VFF SC, vs 700 for QF SG.
I fly to NZ twice a year, sometimes in premyY with (Air)NZ, if you do fly with VFF and partners, now that SQ will fly Au - NZ and with (Air)NZ, plus VA, and FB, its easier to retain status with VFF than with QF & WW.
FB will give you 120 VFF SC a year, if you add bonuses, its even better, and plus VFF and partners, ...
For Swanning_it, yes, VA also knows my email address.

Community VA has asked if I would like to beta test a new Android app (I assume they are also revising the existing iOS app as well).

Registered and now awaiting info on how to download it through Google Play (as it will not be openly available at this time)...

Me three! Just signed up for it...will be interesting to see what they've come up with.

No invite for me (WP). All of my flying is Y though, so I'm probably not "high value".

One thing I have noticed is that the emails they end (top x% of earners/redeemers) don't seem to capture family pooling. I usually reach WP half way through the year and family pool to my wife (and usually get her SG or WP), but they only had my non-pooled balances and earn (I guess the pooled ones get counted as earned by Mrs G).

Not a big issue, but interesting. Might be something that gets more important if VA ever thinks about doing a lifetime status.

As I was reading your post, I thought "ah, that's an indicator for possible lifetime status", then I read your last line ... I concur. Let's hope, hey!

As a data point, they specifically mentioned in my beta test invitation that it was because I had indicated that I would be flying with them next month, so that may be what they wanted.
