On flt Tsv-Bne today just prior to take off the snr flt attendant announced over pa something along the line of passengers getting up from their seats & assisting in closing bins (can’t remember if overhead bin was used).
I was in row 4 & not aware how many passengers assisted behind my row. One gentleman in business shut all the bins in business. Gentleman on aisle opposite my row shut his bin.
when I realised seat next to me would be empty I got up & got my bag out of bin & put it in under front of seat next to me. This was prior announcement.
my thought when I heard announcement was they Veronicas’ 😀
Is this common practice now.

Don't know if it's official announcement. But would help a lot with OTP. If everyone shut their lockers instead of two cabin crew for each locker, it is quicker to then shut the forward door.

Assuming that it’s only shut when everyone’s loaded their items. There should be an announcement otherwise it’s open shut open shut.

Without wanting to go OT, on my SYD-MEL flight this morning the FAs were proactively moving bags to other bins and lifting up passengers bags for them. Seems the opposite of the Veronicas brouhaha

Only shut when all the lockers are shut and everyone has been seated. If there is someone standing, it will stay open.

Appreciate the assistance from fellow passengers to help close the overhead lockers. However, what's the take on a passenger doing the, for the lack of a better word, job/duty of the FA. I've heard instances where FA's don't want passengers to help them, because if the passengers gets hurt while helping, it could breach OHAS (Occupational Health & Safety) stuff ?

I write this with the assumption that it's the "job/duty" of the FA to close overhead lockers. Apologies, if my assumption is incorrect :)

Have you seen someone being told off for doing this? As a passenger, I don’t mind who closes the bins. Heck, I’ve done that myself when my bag is last in to fill an overhead bin. The cabin crew would be responsible for ensuring that they have been closed, but I have not heard of any rules that prohibit pax from doing this, even if their name is Veronica. 😄

Until someone closes those bins, the aircraft is going nowhere.

I always close the overhead once I’ve put my bag inside. Leaving them open makes many of them obstacles for people walking down the aisle. How many of our taller members have either collected one, or continually have to duck around them?

I always close (for ulterior motives) the overhead even if my bag is the only one in the overhead. Lots of people do that

I dont believe OTP is significantly hampered by opened overheads. If it did then premature closing the overheads (prior to all accomodation of all overheads bags) will result in the reopening of the compartment to squeeze the last bit of bag in

Best way to ensure OTP in this situation is to actually ban overhead carryons. if you can't fit it under the seat in front of you it goes checked.

Well, one thing that would help OTP, is for passengers to sit down. The cabin crew will not close the doors until everyone is seated, and it usually takes a few more minutes for the bridge to be retracted. So, basically you aren't going anywhere until about 3 minutes after the last person sits.

A bigger issue there would be mindless fools walking down the aisle without paying any attention to where their bag is and where other people are.

I still have a bruise on my arm from when another pax's bag hit it while boarding QF822 a month ago.

... and what else goes on back there? Looking for a better seat? 😀

I've seen that one a number of times when paxing. Generally someone boards quite late, wanders into business, and simply takes an empty seat. I've never seen it work, but I guess it must for them to keep trying.
