Starts in 30 minutes ...

" At any one time there are a million people flying above our heads. But what does it take to run this city in the sky? This series explores the inner workings of the facilities that keep this global network functioning. "

-47°C !! 1 hour layover ...

Blankets for the wheels (utilising the 200° brake heat by keeping it in) ... 65° hot air to stop engine lubricants from freezing ....

Gee, I didn't think Melbourne got that cold !

:p

Interesting program. Thanks for the reminder Serfty.

Suddenly I feel more exited towards my A380 flight tomorrow :)

I certainly learnt some new things on the logistics side. The show was reasonably well researched, though did I hear correctly, they claimed DXB and ATL as the "world's busiest"? Perhaps they cited different metrics.

The male presenter overdid it at times, just getting a bit too excited reading hit scripts. Some of the graphics were clever and unlike similar programs they didn't show one aircraft type while claiming it to be another. A clean edit.

Interesting and informative. 8 out of 10.

Available to view online via ABC iview City In The Sky : ABC TV

ATL - most PAX departures per year
DXB - most international PAX departures per year
FRA - most international destinations

Most annoying show ever.

Most annoying show ever.

Rather an interesting thing to say, which begs the question....Why?

Clearly someone doesn't watch much tv :). I enjoyed it.

The presenter's bits with text messaging each other was pretty annoying, though. What on earth was the point of that? To establish their Millenial-Youth credentials? To show how technologically "with it" the show is? To explain to us what was going on (clarifying complex plot-twists like "I'm watching an A380 take off")?

I enjoyed it; the baggage system at DXB looks awesome.

Well if you insist ...

(1) The titular analogy which becomes the basic premise for the show is silly. 1 million PAX airborne at any one time does represent the population of a small to medium size city such as Adelaide.
However that is as far as it goes. In no other respect are those 1 million PAX on thousands of aircraft comparable to a city.
(2) This feeble premise is used to justify the participation of the person who "does the mathematics of cities" who doesn't ever seem to have seen an aircraft before.
Great junket if you can get it.
(3) The story about the measures they take to heat an aircraft during a layover in Siberia was interesting. Although the many continuity errors were annoying.
(4) Apart from that the show seemed to consist of merely "wow isn't that big!" "how can something so heavy take off?" and "gee aren't there a lot of bags!".
Maybe as a frequent flyer I am just not in the target demographic for this sort of incredulity.
(5) Opportunities to add insights weren't taken. The effusive segment on the A380 seemed either ignorant or out of date. While I hope that the rumours of its demise are exagerrated, it was wrong to
present it as the unambiguous future of aviation, without any mention of the way fuel costs and economic circumstances had placed its future under a cloud.
(6) As someone else has commented, showing the two freeloaders, I mean presenters, sending text messages to each other was juvenile.

Might be worth looking at the episode titles: departure, airborne, arrival BBC Two - City in the Sky - Episode guide
Departure, last night, "what does it take to get a plane in the air?" Pretty much the story that was told.

The texting: wasn't that the equivalent of "back to you in the studio"? Except they are not in the studio, they are mobile...

Loved most of it, particularly the segment at the end when he was in the coughpit with the pilots on the A380. (possibly because I learnt something I did not know about flight)
Hated the texting, what's with that? Was just seconds of dead air as far as I'm concerned.
Fascinated by the luggage system in DXB. And airport design - who knew? I did have a terrible time trying to figure out the layout of SFO recently (could not find the right exit, or an ATM without help), and changing terminals at LAX was also a bit fraught. Very little reassuring signage.
Cynical me also wondered why they only showed the prep of what looked like First class meals. Tin foil Y meals don't film as well, I'm sure.
Can someone explain to me why Brits are so attached to Centigrade as a temp scale, or else why we call it Celsius?

The poor sods that live in that village ... every two weeks

I really enjoyed it for what it was. The airport design and layout section was very interesting. The work and understanding of psychology and human behaviour was something I had never considered before and it makes total sense now that I know. I actually thought that the text messaging was good. That's certainly how I communicate at the airport. 'Just checked in' / 'flight delayed, again' / 'boarding now' etc.

Yes some of the A380 stuff was a bit overdone, and out of date, but then I don't think I was the primary target for this. My wife loved it, and we will certainly be watching next week.

One last thing, I loved how excited the male presenter got when he got to sit in the jump seat during take off. Like a kid in a candy store.
