I'm planning on a visit to Chengdu for a few days in May (first visit to China) and was intending on flying to Shenzhen in the evening then crossing the border to Hong Kong. Would I have any issues with the visa as I wouldn't have an itinerary showing a flight out of China? If I show proof of an onward flight from Hong Kong (HKG-SIN) would this suffice?

A very similar scenario was ok for my son recently. he flew into Xian and then had a land border crossing back into HK and flew out from there. He provided his HKG-BNE flight details with his visa application and no questions were asked.

Just this second I have completed a Visa application for China - as a part of a cruise for next year. I think as long as they see a return ticket to your home country (or out of China) you would be fine. We will be in Shanghai and then return through Hong Kong.

Thanks NM and Pushka, I'll include the itinerary for my onward flight from HKG and hope for the best.

Just a quick update. Applied for the visas last month, including my itinerary for the HKG-BNE flight and adding "Travel from Shenzhen to Hong Kong 2014-05-07 then fly to Australia 2014-05-12" in the extra information column. Mailed the passports off and got them back with the visas in less than 2 weeks! Thanks again for everyone's help.
