Found an interesting (IMO) article in recent edition (22/10) of Time mag on China making a regional jet.
I couldn't imagine an online bidding war for the seats on the first commercial flight. Maybe you get paid to be on it.

China's Aircraft Industry Gets Off the Ground - TIME

Dubbed the Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st Century — the ARJ21 — the aircraft is the fruit of China's first solo commercial aircraft project in nearly 40 years, and it promises to be one of the world's most technologically sophisticated when it takes off for the first time in March 2008. Onboard are the most advanced avionics, propulsion and malfunction-monitoring systems available. With room for 90 passengers (up to 105 in a stretch version), "the ARJ21 will prove China is striving to become a world-class aircraft manufacturer," says Wang Yawei, vice president of the ARJ21's financier, the state-run China Aviation Industry Corporation I (AVIC I).

I wonder if this is a clone of some western jet as so many of the soviet a/c have been in the past.

That is a fairly old list of aircraft there NM - anything more recent been copied?

Its been a long time since Illusion or Tupolev had made a new aircraft model. And Antonov are not very well known for their commercial passenger aircraft ;) . I suppose you liken the AN-148 a BAE73 (that is half a BAE146). Or an AN140 to a Dash-8-100?

And I think the AN72 came about when the Russians got the stolen plans upsidedown.

Agreed with all except the ' BAE146ski - aka IL76' as the IL76 was/is a much larger a/c than the BAE146.

Maybe I call call it a BAE292ski then :p .

I remember by father used to refer to the Leyland P76 as a P38 because he said was only half the car it should have been (even though you could fit a 44 gallon drum in the boot).

And I did take some liberty with the DC3ski since the IL14 is not a tail-dragger but a tricycle gear design.

Try C141 - AKA IL76, larger cargo hold and more powerful engines!

The problem for the Russians was the slow development of High-bypass turbofans. So whilst aircraft like the 747, L1011, DC10 and A300 had these from the late 60's/early 70's the Russians were still using low-bypass designs right up until the early 80's. Hence the poor old IL86 had very inferior engines to it's Western equivalents.

Whats the relevance of all this? I'm not sure;)

I hope those planes would be a bit more reliable than some of the electronic goods that I acquired that were made me China :-|

They'll be heavier and slower than any Western equivalents due to the use of lead based paints

I think I will wait until this type of aircraft has had at least 10 years of flying time before boarding one.

Oh, you want to wait until it approaches the end of its design life before you try it out  .

vast bulk of the cheap and nasty chinese electronics (think no name mp3 etc) has a design life closer to 12 months in my experience

I was giving them the benefit of the doubt that they would be of superior quality to the cheap and nasty MP3 players. However, if they can get 12 months out of the MP3/4 based IFE system before it dies, then that is major improvement over a certain other carrier;s AVOD system  .

NM,

You are being generous with the time line. I probably would have said: Oh, you want to wait until it's past its design life before you try it out  :!:

Oooh some of those are a bit mean :)

IL86/96 was a widebody with 4 engines. Predated the A340 by about 15 years. Had about 20% the range though.
Tu204 is more of a 757 ripoff than a A300/767 - there's even a version with the same PW engines!
Some other 'skis:
The Tu-4 was a direct copy of the B-29 down to the rivets.
The Yak-40 was a three engine that looked a bit like a cross between a 727 and F28.

Back on topic, this regional jet fetish going round at the moment is just to lead to massive losses for everyone. It'll probably make sure the C-Series never get launch approval - I can't see how BOM will ever make their money back on it.

Of course, if theirs doesn't crash, that could be a selling feature ;)

Why not? It took well over 10 years before I flew in a B777, A330 and A340. And I think it was only this year that I flew in a B717, B757, A320, A310 and A300 for the first time.

It will be interesting to see how long it will be before I get to travel in an A380 and I think I will give the B787 a good few years after the first flight before trying it out.
