Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Poor Christmas Island. It’s a fantastic nature destination which is struggling with the phosphate mine closing, expensive flights and bad publicity that the Detention Centre brings.

Every time they make some tourism progress, the federal government tells the world ”that’s were we’re sending our terrorists”, ”that’s where we’re sending our diseased” etc.

I’ve had 3 holidays there and encourage others to give it a go.

I did hear on the radio this morning that there are luxury resorts there.

Reading report some are now rethinking if they actually want to leave China because the destination is CI. Some people hey.....

I’d still get out regardless of where to because there is no way on knowing how long they may be stuck there. Although it’s likely where they used to live anyway.

So much for self isolation.
“Diners at a Melbourne restaurant may have been exposed to coronavirus and have been urged to be aware of symptoms.
There have now been two confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria and seven across Australia.
The latest patient is a man in his 60s who travelled to Wuhan City in China and is now being isolated while he recovers.
Victoria’s chief health officer Dr Brett Sutton said the man became sick on January 23, two days after returning from China and had remained isolated except for attending dinner with his family on Australia Day.
The man ate at The House of Delight restaurant in Glen Waverley in Melbourne’s southeast with five family members between 5.30pm and 7pm. Dr Sutton urged anyone who was at the restaurant during this time to be aware of symptoms.”

So he went out for dinner 3 days after falling ill. On the other hand maybe this is much milder, but obviously very contagious, than has been mentioned?

I think some cultural understanding is warranted. Chinese people can be very fearful of authority given the Communist regime. Christmas Island, with its recent history might be perceived as a prison.

Quarantine is a harsh reality... 14 days is bugger all.

Which of course makes sense. But by staying that is exactly where they are putting themselves - and already are under - strict communist control. So?

I guess Wuhan is home, and Xmas Island is a very uncertain destination.
They will likely be accommodated on Xmas Is. in the same salubrious conditions enjoyed by the illegals

By now the Wuhan locals probably have a handle on their prospects.. <2% mortality but uncertain recovery outcomes.
Once bitten they should have some level of immunity.
I might choose to stay home with those options

Even better when they find out it isn’t contrary to media/activist complaints over recent years that it is.
It’s only 14 days.
It is not logical to go from a lockdown situation to walking the streets. I think this is fair and proportionate

I am not saying its not fair and the right thing to do. I agree it should be done. But we also need to understand people that have been traumatised or who live in genuine fear of authority whether it is 1 hour or 14 days it will make no difference (and I say this with a mental health professional background)

I meant the Aus govt at Christmas Island as it was a reply to a comment about treatment at CI
But looking at the picture, I don’t think CI will be any worse

Besides infectivity, the danger of staying is resource limitation - especially staff. Your staff get sick as much if not more so than the community. The new england paper indicated 7% of those infected were health care workers.

WHO will reconvene again at 13:30 Geneva time (UTC+1, or 2330hrs AEST) to determine the next steps which may be to declare a global emergency - in official terminology “public health emergency of international concern” - “PHEIC”.
It did say on Jan27 it was not PHEIC.

There have been 4? PHEIC in recent times:

2009 Influenza pandemic
2014 Wild polio resurgence
2014? West Africa Ebola outbreak
2018 Zika Virus
Note that SARS was not a PHEIC event for a cariety

Email just received from our school...

Please note the following advice provided by the Director General of the Queensland Department of Education this afternoon:

Late today, health authorities have provided updated advice regarding the management of the novel Coronavirus.

This updated advice includes:

  • anyone who has been in contact with any confirmed novel Coronavirus cases must self-isolate (self-isolation means staying at home and not accepting visitors) for 14 days following exposure;
  • travellers who have visited Hubei Province of China need to self-isolate for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province;
  • returned travellers who have visited China cannot attend school, childcare or TAFE for 14 days after leaving China including Hong Kong.
I encourage you to regularly check the official websites of the Australian and Queensland Government Departments of Health

Previous media reporting and the close association with refugee detention is unfortunate for both the CI inhabitants and for potential returnees from China.

The tourism industry and inhabitants of CI are unfairly associated with the actions of the Feds and the "bad" people "in jail" there.

The already stressed returnees will naturally be hesitant about going there having been bombarded for years about how "boat" people (and by association non-whites) have been "jailed" for years.

People fear the unknown.
With the 'normal' flu, you know what you are going to get more or less.
But a new virus emerges and people don't know how bad it could get.
