Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

So what happens to the people if someone on Christmas Island develops the illness? Does the 14 day reset?

Apparently the government is chartering a QF 747 for the evacuation flight.
A 747 can't land on Christmas Island so presumably it will land on the mainland (PER?) and PAX will be transferred to smaller aircraft to fly to XCH.
This would also provide an opportunity to redirect NZ citizens.
I doubt NZ would allow Australia to detain its citizens on an island given our appalling track record.
However it seems to somewhat defeat the purpose of isolating these people offshore.

Apparently it will land at Darwin or I think my brother mentioned Exmouth? Anyway, remote. He could be wrong.

Saw footage of hospital corridors filled with people. Im guessing if you didnt have it before you arrived, you most prob have it after that cattle situation.

Havent spotted anyone at my local village shops wearing masks yet but I suspect once someone does, everyone will start. They just need someone to be the first to trigger it

Locked up in a “Detention Centre”? Is that the best that we can do. And yes, I get the isolation thing.

It's a detention centre, not a 3-star hotel. I doubt they'll leave the gates open and let people wander all over the island.
Maybe they will find out it’s not so bad after all.
But yes it is. I don’t think there are 3 star hotels built for quarantine. I’ve heard good facilities though. They will be well looked after given medical checks

.... locked up in a detention centre, not a resort. The facility was designed to keep "undesirables" including some really nasty characters secure until they could be deported and was never designed to a "tropical island paradise".
Might not be ideal, but it’s only 2 weeks, but it is way way better than being trapped in Wuhan with hospitals under pressure and the situation constantly worsening. No one is being forced to evacuate so if they don’t like the Christmas Island scenario they can stay.

The Government also has a responsibility to try to contain possible problems and a 2 week stay with good medical treatment doesn’t seem too onerous.

I’m sure they will get culturally appropriate meals though I think fried snake, bats, civets will not be on the menu.

I would go if it meant I would be outside ground zero.
And if I had in my family elderly parents, young children and/or a medically vulnerable family member I would take them there.

I would pick Christmas Island over Wuhan. Like FM said, better opportunity to get medical if needed.

Would prefer 2 weeks at CI and then released/flown home than 2 weeks in Wuhan and the situation is only worsening.

People fear the unknown.
With the 'normal' flu, you know what you are going to get more or less.
But a new virus emerges and people don't know how bad it could get.

except when the flu turns out to be like a Spanish flu pandemic.

note that each year the influenza virus has mutated and is different to the last. Should we treat it like the same old same old?.

I wonder if they know that they are not coming to Australia. Instead, Christmas Island. Are they only going to be there for 2 weeks? They will have no say in that.
