Pretty straight forward....I hope
what international destination has the cheapest business or Jetstar star class prices
(or anything similar to Jetstar star class)
New Zealand excluded (other then Queenstown)
and I'm not totally convinced of scoot as I want everything included in the price,
and seat back screen, not wanting to pay extra for salt&pepper and to use the bathroom

You don't say where you're starting from - but from Perth you'll find cheap deals on Garuda to Bali (equal to the top airlines these days), from Gold Coast there's Hong Kong Airlines, Qantas has cheap business class deals to Jakarta. Jetstar - Singapore and coughet can be in the $600 range, even cheaper if you get one of their super sales (but it's not really business class, and on those deals there's no lounge access included).

Scoot biz includes everything in the price, bags, meal and a drink. But again not really business class. Air Asia also has some specials for their business class at times.

What is your goal?

status?
points?
or starting a holiday in style? (In which case your preferred holiday style will determine where you go)
or just to fly J because you can/want to?

I guess to start and finish holiday in style, not interested in sc points or anything like that, starting from anywhere on the east coast
happy to go Singapore or Tokyo, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Fiji, Vanuatu etc etc

Hong Kong Airlines will do $2000 return to Hong Kong or for about $200 more, several places in Asia including Bangkok (via Hong Kong). Or do a stopover and have two cities.

Malaysia, Air Asia has flat beds (angled) but economy service. Royal Brunei may be sub $2000 to Asia. Departs Melbourne. Good food and flat beds but have to take your own alcohol.

Noumea is also cheap.

Otherwise business class ex Australia is just plain expensive.

You could buy miles through Avianca Lifemiles. That will give you all of asia return buinsess class on Thai (from any Australian capital ex ADL) for around $1600 including tax.

Some of the new Chinese carriers worth a look. Royal Brunei ex MEL (sans booze) is always cheap. VN FJ GA often HAVE deals.

You do get what you pay for though

VA from AKL to RAR is often around $1,000 return (or less) in J. Add a positioning flight from Australia to Auckland on China Airlines or LATAM for ~$700 return when there's a sale on and you have a holiday to the Cook Islands flying J for a semi-reasonable price.

Serious question... I know that alcohol is not provided on Royal Brunei, but are you allowed to bring your own? I would have thought this would not be permitted (as is the case on most airlines).

I'm assuming you want at least 10 hours of bum time in the seat. CZ has pretty cheap prices (under $3k), but you can't end your trip in CAN. You need to pick a city and fly "backwards" try Hanoi, Manilla...

This is a peculiarity of Royal Brunei. The crew will bring you a glass and any mixers, add your own alcohol. Whether or not this might be seen as 'insensitive' to both the crew and/or other pax I dunno. You wouldn't ask the crew to touch the alcohol or serve it to you. But I guess you could do the 'top up' discretely (I think you still advise the crew so they can keep an eye on the consumption of alcohol.)
