Hi,

looking for a one way J for 2 pax from oz to London. Have US airways latest offer as an option but keen to try to use some QF and BA points if at all possible rather than buying and 'wasting' the USDM points on a return.

Between my husband and I, we have a total of 216k QF and 80k Avios but both only Silver QFF and blue BAEC so not keen to chance the upgrade lottery and aware of very hefty OW taxes compared to *A.

Happy to explore multiple itineraries/stop overs as required and would love to fly at least part way on CX if at all possible as husband raves about them but I haven't had the pleasure.

Budget of 3.5k each max,

thanks,

Maggie

Can you get access to 40k more miles? Mel-Dxb-Lhr on EK redemption is 128k per person

Hi,

I just did some quick searching using my BA account and Malaysian has availability on 9, 10 and 11 June from Mel to LHR.

You could buy one ticket with QF points (you have to ring to book Malaysian) and buy enough (60K) AA points to get the other ticket. AA has a sale on points at the moment.

I didn't look for any fancy routings - I suggest you get a community (free) AwardNexus account per the post that just went up today offering free community accounts and do some further searching there. It is a very easy to use and powerful tool.

I am keeping my own eye on some Cathay flights at the moment and they seem to release seats 2 to 4 weeks out so you may be able to get onto Cathay further down the track. If you want a points booking I would personally book the Malaysian seats to guarantee the flights and then swap to Cathay if the right seats become available later on. There may be change fees though depending on which program you use to make the bookings.

Dale.

If you only need 40K more points then you can each buy 20K more points through the Qantas topup points facility. Will depend how the points are spread between the accounts though as you can only transfer 100K points to family members per year.

Dale.

Thanks guys, some really good ideas in here and appreciate the speedy responses. What sort of taxes am I looking at with an entirely one world itinerary?

I've had award nexus for quite a while and agree its a great tool which I was happy to help test and to donate to. All travel so far has been on *A because frankly it's easier and cheaper to book but we're relocating back to the UK with only one job so I want the overall cost as cheap as possible without having to slum it in Y! I can also use the QF and BA points to go to Europe/US at some point in the future from UK so not the end of the world if I don't use now.

If you're happy to buy AA miles there are 2 J awards from MEL-LHR on June 4. Unusual route via SYD/PVG for about $1900 pp including taxes on QF/BA.

There's lots of useful advice in the American Airlines Advantage (it should be AAdvantage) forum on this site. Have a read under buy miles programme. All you need to do is:

Join AAdvantage online (it's free).

Have a look at Award availability or ring AA in the US(preferably)

Put the award(s) on hold for 5 days

Buy the miles (60000 for one way J to Europe) and wait until they post, at which time you will have to pay taxes/charges(quite low as long as you avoid BA).

Enjoy the flight! Unfortunately the awards on June 4 are now gone but if you post in the AA thread you should get some useful advice.

Is this price one way? Is the SYD-PVG on QF an A330 with Skybed MK1?

I'm afraid the awards are now gone but it was one way. The price included purchase of AA miles (including the bonus that was current)and associated taxes, as well as taxes/surcharges for the flight( mainly BA fuel for PVG-LHR). I can't recall the exact route for the QF leg so I can't specify the equipment. As is well-documented on AFF buying AA miles at the right time gives great value for J seats to Europe (and elsewhere).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
