Hi all. I read through a number of posts but was unable to find if there is a website/program/etc that will give me a list of cheap flights from my home city (Melbourne) on any dates. For me, I don't really care where or when I go, I just want a cheap flight :) For exmaple, I know travelling to NZ will be cheaper than flying to Asia (all else constant), but I'm looking for cheap flights compared to "normal" rates - I hope I make sense lol

Has anyone had any success with this or any idea what I'm talking about?

Also, can someone point me in the right direction for reading material on different flight status (eg. J, X, etc) as I have no idea what they mean?

I tried this too on Adioso and thought I found a good deal, but when it links through to bkg at AirAsia, it goes up by $110. Perhaps it's the taxes etc.

Normally it includes taxes everything that is bare minimum. But none of the extras like meals and baggage. Sometimes the fares can get out of date. It looks like for some airlines they get a dump of fares at a particular time, but it does display when the fare was last checked. There is a refresh button on Adioso, if you press that it will go off and get the latest prices.

"recently made illegal to travel under someone else's name"

I hadn't caught up w' that, but not surprising.

And the current live price on Adioso (when refreshed ready to book) can also be lower than last price, it initially quotes.

I find Adioso pretty good but it is mainly focused around low cost carriers.

Some example searches for you

The best flights MEL to Somewhere Warm - Adioso
The best flights MEL to New Zealand - Adioso

My reference point is DoHop, which also allows you to sort by Price, Total Flying Time, Number of Stops, and to set preferred arrival and departure times
Cheap flights, Hotels and Rental cars | Dohop.com

I find it best for complicated route planning, but as far as I can tell, the price offerings are current and competitive. Others may have better suggestions.
